New Used HardTail Strat Day, but you knew that already. :)

Been looking for a Hardtail Strat for quite some time. I’ve come close to pulling the trigger on Robert Cray Strats but for whatever reasons never did. 70’s just don’t float my boat and they are way overpriced. A couple of years ago I got me one of those Longboard Strats. I liked the guitar but not the pups. I didn’t want to swap pups on a special run Strat so off it went.

About a month ago I found a 1996 American Standard Hardtail Strat on local CL for a fair price. It’s in excellent+ condition and appears to be all original, but I’m not 100% sure. It’s been played but I can’t find a dent on it and it is pretty much scratch free. The pickguard looks almost too new to be true. It could have been swapped out but I’m pretty sure it’s the original. There’s a little bit of fret wear but overall it looks like its spent most of its life in its case, basically a “closet classic”.

It was set up for slide; in fact the bridge was pretty much maxed out on the high side. In a lame attempt to adjust the action down I accidently lost one of the bridge adjustment screws, so off to my favorite guitar tech it went.

I got it back yesterday. The set up was pretty much perfect. It’s a little on the bright side but has excellent sustain. Really my only gripe is that the black body with maple fretboard is not my favorite color scheme. I would have preferred a natural with a rosewood board but American Standard Hardtails are more than hard to find, especially in near new condition.

I might just keep it

Yeah...kind of a boring color combo. But if it sounds good and plays well...well...then you got the guitar you want/need and it won't matter.

Very cool, congrats on the score.

I've never owned a hardtail, but I should because most of my Strats (all 4 American Dlx Strats) are set up so that the trem block doesn't move. I moved to this set up while playing in an alt country rock band because it's needed for faux pedal steel licks.

Very nice! It's calling out for a single ply black PG, though. ;-)

Thanks guys.

5Strats - I got it to more easily go between alternate tunings and because I no longer own a Tele. It could come in handy if I ever get off my butt and get in a band. It won't be replacing my set to float 50th Anni American Series Strat however.

HeavyDuty - You read my mind.

I think it looks fantastic. I wouldn't change a thing. Clapton had no problem w/ a guitar that looked like this.

Yeah - I was thinking "classic Clapton" and a classic Fender look...

...if you're gonna change it, I'd go with a tortoise guard... or just a mint or off-white/cream-ish one...

Thanks all. I won't be changing anything out anytime soon. The "Blackie" look might just grow on me in time.

I could see swapping the pups eventually. It's a little bit mid-scooped. The pups are non-staggered which might be part of that equation.

JAFO - I gave it a good workout through the Merc yesterday. What a fun amp! It sounded great, well except for all my clams. :)

I once replaced the plastics on a black/white Strap with parchment...it gave it a much cooler look IMHO. Subtly different, but definitely different.

Mint scratchplate works great with black and maple.

Yeah, I'd go either mint or parchment per mfitz804. My other 2 Strats have parchment, which I really like.

Actually...one of those anodized gold-tone pickguards would probably look cool, too.
