Hi there. I just got a new axe, a 2017 Les Paul Tribute Goldtop. It is fine.
I had a 50's Tribute which was nice, but I already had other guitars with P90s, and never had a LP with humbuckers. I also wanted a 60s neck like my 335.
I don't need the bling, so this is just right and a good bargain for a Gibson. Mahogany body, maple top, good pickups, good hardware. Got it from Sweetwater; it arrived in tune with action, relief, pickup height correct. These are pleked and it plays nicely. I like the satin gold and the fake binding (natural maple). A keeper for me. Nice tones and long sustain.
I actually had another example of this model and had to send it back for the one I have now. The first was lighter, but the string-to-fretboard edge clearance was much greater on the treble side. I like a little extra on the high side, but this was too much. Looks like the neck was slightly misaligned. I guess some hand fitting still takes place. Anyway, quick exchange and my man Matt looked out for me.

I had a '69 Goldtop which I bought for $150 from my pal Larry in '69. I got the $150 by selling my '62 Tele. He also included a BM cab with 2 JBLs. Sold it a couple of years ago for $8K. Bought a lot of gear with that!

That plastic Elvis has danced longer than the real one.
If only we could all just swap in some new batteries!

Gibson's putting out some nice stuff (and anybody will make a lemon sometimes).

I'm still in love with my '14 339 and '16 LP HP.

A couple minor things I like about it is that the strap buttons are finally large. No need to use strap locks unless you prefer them (as I do). Also, the tone controls have an effect all the way to zero. The volume controls have most of their action from 6-10 it seems, but still some set lower. I haven't looked yet to see if there is a treble bleed installed, but the loss of treble is not as pronounced when decreasing volume as on some other guitars.

I bought mine on a trip to the music store for strings. I had no intention of buying a guitar, but I couldn't take my eyes off it. Being left handed, you just don't walk into a guitar store and immediately see a left handed goldtop.
Gibson had just increased the price by $100, and the guitar had just arrived, so I had to pay $999, but I couldn't be more pleased. To help ease the pain of the increase, Gibson seriously upgraded the gig bag. Mine is a zippered, thick padded bag with a nice plush interior and a neck rest to further protect the guitar.

Gibson is actually paying attention to the masses:

- They abandoned the G Force as a standard feature on many guitars

- They're installing larger strap buttons

- The neck rest in a gig bag is *huge* for tilt-headstock guitars

Transporting one in a gig bag without a neck rest is pretty much *daring* the headstock to break off.

I got a bag with mine too. Didn't need it, but I'll probably use it to go to a friend's house, etc. Very nice bag.

"Also, the tone controls have an effect all the way to zero. The volume controls have most of their action from 6-10 it seems..."

You're describing the exact behaviour of logarithmic (audio) (6-10) and linear pots (0-10). Pretty sure that's the standard Gibson scheme, but I'm not that well-versed in all things Gibson.

Nice guitar btw, and congrats on your purchase!

RDR:

Congrats on the 2017 Tribute GoldTop.....they are really decent guitars, and, in my opinion, a true value, especially considering that Gibson is often TOTALLY INSANE on their pricing!

Not may realize it, but THE ORIGINAL Les Pauls were Goldtops (w/P90's) and HEAVY suckers, routinely weighing OVER 10 pounds.

They shipped with 12's..some even came with 13's believe it or not!

Today's Goldtops are bantam weight compared to the old timers......

If you check my profile, you'll see that I like Gibsons, and own a 2013 Les Paul Standard Goldtop...it's a GREAT guitar!

Goldtops are classy-looking guitars...thats what Les thought when he "set 'em free!"
