My favorite bass player has finally graced the pages of Bass Player magazine with a write-up and transcription of the tune Mobile from Gentle Giant's Free Hand album.

If you've never heard Gentle Giant pick up the Free Hand album and then go back to their Three Friends album and work your way forward to 1975/76.

Ray is easily one the greatest bass player in Rock history.

Sounds like a Rickenbacker with the treble pickup solo'ed. What is he playing there?

The article mentions a '72 P Bass was used for the recording but the several times I saw the band live, Ray played a mid-60's P Bass.

BTW, I failed to mention that the transcription is in the June issue of BP.

I have all the GG LPs and many on CD, too. I first heard of them when Octopus was released, and saw them in the Winter of '75 when they opened for Rick Wakeman during his King Arthur tour.

Ray was playing a P bass, never seen him in any video with a Rick. I have a roll of slides I made of GG at that show; I was right up front at the edge of the stage for the show (Riverfront Coliseum-Cincinnati). The only photo I have of Rick was from when we were visiting with Rick at the hotel after the show.

Jeff, I was also at the Cincinnati show. It was also my first time seeing Gentle Giant although I had all their albums up to Free Hand by then. I still have my ticket stub; Section 102, Row B, seat 4.

I'll be at an event with Gary Green, Malcolm Mortimore and Kerry Minnear later this year.
