I wanted a small amp for travel. Sometimes I drive to work locations and wanted a travel-friendly amp for hotel rooms. What predicated this purchase was a trip to Atlanta to visit with my grand daughter (who is almost 2)last week. I wanted to play guitar for her and carrying my nearly 50lb PV Vypyr 75 was not an option.

What I wanted was a small amp that didn't sound too small. Also, some FX were on my list. Also... $100-ish.

I ended up snagging a new Blackstar ID Core 10 at GC. They have the red ones on sale for $89. A pair of 3" speakers in an oversized closed cab and 5w x 2 output. Some nice tone selections and also a nice palate of FX.

The amp has a pretty broad range of tones. It has a pair of clean settings that go from warm to scooped. The distortion and OD setting cover a wide gamut as well. The amp is their ISF tone control so I it can do scooped to mid-boosted tones. I found nice tones that I can use.

I did find the amp a little boxy sounding. To that end I popped off the grille and drilled two 1" ports in the top and bottom centerline of the front baffle. The amp sounds bigger now.

In the end I think this amp is going to replace my Vypyr in our den downstairs. Space is at a premium in our home and this amp fits a lot better down there.

And I ordered a pair of 3", 4 ohm full range speakers from amazon to replace the stock speakers. The stock speakers are rated at 5w - which is also the amp's output. The speakers are ordered are 20w. I figure - what the heck. This is a Dolemite-approved endeavor, I'm sure. ;-)

Mine's a boring old black one.

Can get really loud for a ten-watter.

Technically I'm into this amp for $120 now with new speakers. I suspect those are going to be a nice kick in the pants in this amp.

You followed Roland's example: they drill a port in the baffle of their Microcube.

As an experiment I sealed the port in a Microcube and it gave the amp a tighter tone--typical for a closed-back cabinet. I'm guessing the folks at Blackstar were going for the Marshall vibe by using a sealed cabinet.

How does that amp compare to the Microcube?

I've never played a MicroCube. :O

The new speakers are an improvement in bass and volume in general. A nice kick in the pants, as stated above.
