I recall NOT having monitors in the early 70s. At least, not anything like we have today.

BUT I also recall in the first decade of the current century (GOSH THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GEEZER) we would sometimes set the amps in front and tilt back to keep from blowing the hair back on the audience in SMALL venues.

The 2 or 3 venues where that was fairly common for us and other bands had tall stages...and I recall one was 15x14...and we were a six person band (yes, the dreaded 3 guitar, keys, bass, drums). Thus we had to have the extra room.

So, amps on the floor facing us was a solution to two "problems".

I recall in the 60s we did not have a PA at a lot of gigs and simply plugged into one of the channels on our Silvertone 212...

As for why Little Feat did it? Soundman or roadie was stoned?

I think they are guitar monitors - they are only pointing at the two guitarists. I sometimes set a combo amp up like that for gigs when it's also going through the PA. This clip is from The Old Grey Whistle Test, legendary late night BBC TV music show of my youth. It was recorded in a TV studio, so vocal monitors maybe not essential, and while the show claimed to be all live, in lots of clips it clearly wasn't. This one looks like the real deal to me. I've always thought Little Feat under-rated.

In the early 70's the Doobie Bros got a handle on their stage volume by moving their rather loud Ampeg guitar amps to the front, as George has his Super Reverb.

My first "monitor" was one blond Fender 2X12 in front of us, paralleled off the vocal only PA around 1975.
