I own four American Deluxe HSS Strats and my oldest one has an issue where the volume knob chokes off the signal a bit early, making quick volume adjustments for a cleaner sound very difficult.

Do I need a new volume pot for this particular Strat?

Did you install a treble bleed mod on that one?

Has it always done this? If not try some DeOxit and clean that pot. The tone pots too. You just never know. Could be an issue with the S1 too.

I have two Am Dlx Strats. Neither have the stock S1 switching left in them. I went to std Strat wiring and like it better.

Actually, this 2003 model doesn't have the S-1 button. I've had this volume knob issue on this for quite some time.

I would try the deoxit. If that cures it I would change the pot at your earliest convenience. Once they need the deoxit they will always need it. That's been my experience. Ymmv.

If the problem has existed since you got the guitar, chances are pretty good it has a linear taper pot there. Volume controls should use an audio/log taper pot.

Linear-taper pots work great for tone controls, but not for volume.

While not a common problem, I have seen new guitars with linear-taper pots in the volume position.

How to determine if it's a linear taper: use a meter to test the pot. Desolder the leads from tabs 2 and 3. Set the meter to read DC Ohms and test across tabs 1 and 3 (knob position does not matter). That should give you the pot's rating (e.g., 250K, within 10-20%). Next, rotate the pot to the center position and test between tabs 1 and 2, or 2 and 3. If it's a linear taper pot, you'll get 50% of the reading you originally measured.

Did the control always do this? Or did the issue develop over time?

I believe it developed over time, but then I only noticed this when using this guitar for live work. I'm big on riding the volume control between rhythm and lead playing.

Yeah, if you're not messing around trying to keep S1 working just replace the pot with the proper type.

If you stop playing this guitar live you're problem will be solved.

You're welcome. ;-)

Measure the taper. I've never seen pot taper change over time or Deoxit change the taper of a pot.
