FDP Forum / Guitar Mods, Repairs, and Projects / Recommendation for Vintage Type Strat Klusons with Front Hex Mounting

Want to update the turners on my 2006 Mexi Standard Strat to the vintage style Kluson type button style tuners. Issue is the current ones, like most American Strats, do not screw into the back of the headstock and mount with the hex nut in front. Bottom line is I am looking for the front mount style to not have to drills holes in the back of the head stock and a set that will improve some of the tuning stability issues that this particular Strat has from time to time. Any recs that still maintains that classic early strat nickle kluson tuner look would be great but not interested in any locking tuners with extra knobs and such on the back (love that square box look in the back as well)

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

You should be able to use the 10mm with the 2 pin base tuners. The headstock should have the tiny indentations for the tuners to lock into the back of the headstock and the hex-nut tightens the tuner in place.

I've never seen Kluson-style tuners that don't require the screws on the back.
Don't know if there's a trick to mount them without screws, but they need something to keep each tuner from moving. Maybe the brains trust knows something...

As far as the tuner holes, you buy adaptor bushes to fit the 10mm holes, but have a smaller centre hole to accommodate the smaller post of the tuner.

Yeah, I'm unaware of any maker that offers a Kluson-style oval button tuner that uses the 10mm barrel nut on the headstock face and 2-pin indexing on the rear.

This is probably what you have right now.

If you want to change things for cosmetic reasons, that's one thing.

But if you're having problems with tuning stability, I'd look to other things besides the tuning keys.

Agreed.

Nut, bridge.

Tuning machines either work--or they don't. Even the cheepies perform like they should.

Tuners are rarely the issue with tuning stability. I've had new $100 guitars that held tune fine.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I am looking at the cosmetic element so will look elsewhere on the tuning stability. Have looked at numerous sites and Y'all are correct in terms of the possibility of having to use screws if I go with the true Klusons.

Install the 10mm oversize bushings in the face of the headstock, and standard Kluson (screw-type) in the rear. It will cover up the index pin holes and look fairly stock too.
