After the last band I was in fizzled out, I put an ad on CL, "old school guitarist" available. Met with a guy who is a bit younger, but still was doing "oldies" with a Motown/soul flavor. I liked his repertoire, but I knew there was going to be a steep learning curve for me as I really don't know a lot of that genre. So I told him I'd give it a try if he would be patient as I learned. At that time, he was having real problems in getting bass and drums on board.

Then a couple days later, I was contacted by another guy who said he had bass, drums, rhythm guitar and vocals in place and just needed a second guitar. Sat in with them and had a good time.

I don't want to be in two bands, so I had to pick one of these projects. The first guy was talented - good singer and very good guitar player. But I was already getting frustrated with the amount of material I'd have to learn (and at this age, learning new stuff comes much slower). And I was wondering if he could ever put the whole band together, since nobody else seemed to match his standards.

The second bunch were decent but rough, sometimes downright sloppy. But they had a lot of enthusiasm and had quite a number of songs that I already knew and could jump right in with. So I've opted for this group even though the musicianship was maybe not as good. At this point in my life, it has to be fun.

That makes sense to me. Since I have no expectation of fame and fortune in music, my 2 rules about bands are:

1. I only play with people I like.

2. If it's not fun, I don't do it.

Yep. Enthusiasm is so important. Even on pro good paying gigs, if it's not fun, it can get old real fast.

You have to like your bandmates and it has to be fun and have some energy.

You made the right choice.

Musicianship can improve over time.

Personalities--not so much.

Latest update: the band got out for a Friday night gig, and our singer/rhythm player got loaded, forgot words, was all over the place with timing and generally acted like an idiot. This was the 'enthusiastic' guy that initially drew me to the group.

The drummer promptly quit and I'm halfway out the door myself. I have serious doubts that this guy can control his drinking/weed smoking. Oy!
