Didn't need the scribble strips on the bigger brother, and the extra width of the full-size would have eaten even more room on my already filling desk, so pulled the trigger on the compact version (9 100m motorfaders, various other knobs and silliness, Mackie Control Stuff, etc).

The factory demos showed it as running 100% in Tracktion, which was critical for me as I didn't want to change my existing DAW that I'm otherwise happy with to have some studio control again for the first time in years that wasn't a mouse.

Setup was painless - just enabled the MIDI device in the DAW, flipped the control surface on in the "Control surfaces" section, and presto - running.

It does everything I wanted (track arm, solo, pots for fade on a per-channel basis, the motorfaders), and got a demo version for quite a bit off.

The only issue ironically wasn't the unit or the driver or the DAW - Google Chrome defaults to taking MIDI devices over so it'd periodically seize control of the unit. Once I tracked down the culprit, problem solved (and no fault of the manufacturer at all).

I forgot how much I missed having actual knobs and sliders for recording among other controls - not something I *need* but, damn...it's nice to have back.

And < $300 for demo units, was a solid choice. It's a weighty unit, and while the motors make minimal noise while it's doing the automated thing (as reviews told me it would) it's not distracting at all. If I require absolute silence for a track while recording (something nto a loud amp), I just disable automation while recording.

Overall I'd call it a solid thing for home studio use, and luddite proof as long as the DAW in question supports the various automation protocols it handles (Mackie, one of the Pro Tools things, etc).

I have the big X-Touch. I love it as well. In ProTools it's not able to use all of the functionality that the unit is capable of, but Logic Pro works like a champ.

As a bonus, it works as a control surface for my XR18 mixer. I didn't even know that it worked with the XR18 until I hooked it up. It really shines controlling that unit.

Funny how PT is so behind in some ways, yet still considered the industry standard. Studio One, Reaper and other's work great with my surfaces while PT and its HUI protocol leave me frustrated.

Anyway, nice to hear you got a surface going. It REALLY is nice to have at least a fader for rides...

PT seems to only work seamlessly with products produced by Avid. I'm able to do all the important functions in PT, but the jog wheel, scribble strips and some of the other functions don't work.

Yea, I wasn't dealing with PT, so...

The X Touch even works with the venerable ancient version of Tracktion I have on the laptop that barely can handle a couple tracks in at a time - I wasn't expecting it to work with 10 year old DAW software, but...it does!

Exactly. Which happen to be about 10x the price of anything else. I can do everything except bank over, so if I have a track I need to do automation on, I have to drag it into the only bank that works. Weird.

Good on you, Rev! Sounds like you got lucky!

I do my research first.

If Behringer hadn't done the Tracktion videos (an didn't used to give out the software for free, now the version they gave away is free for anyone), I'd just have consulted the Tracktion forums or asked one of their devs.

It's its own ecosystem and particular workflow, but I can say that the folks dealing with it know far, far too much.

And I have to love a company who after getting the rights back to their product from Mackie (but didn't get the user database) just told everyone to pirate the old version if they were a registered user and provided a crack. :)

The more I use this thing the more I like it. It's so nice to be able to grab multiple faders and adjust your mix. It does all the important functions in PT so that's not really an issue either. I was wrong about the scribble strips not working in PT. The text is there, it's the colors that don't change. The only slight annoyance so far is I have to change the language from HUI to MC if I switch DAWs.

Yea, I'm very, very happy with mine - it's made mixing in-depth stuff a LOT more palatable.

And you should be able to switch from HUI to MC with one software command in the X Touch Control thing when it's not running in a DAW (past the 'hold down' button on powerup option).

A few stupid pet tricks with it I couldn't have done on a dumb mixer in the old days either, pushing the button on the pan pots resets them to center instantly - so it's possible to do crazy while mixing and then return to zero in the blink of an eye.

It's easy to switch the language from HUI to MC, I just wish they would use one language and be done with it.

I'm still learning little tricks here and there. I didn't know about pushing the pot to reset to zero. That's a good little trick, thanks!

That's the fault of the software guys more than anything - I'm just happy the thing speaks to all of them!
