I am considering shipping a Gibson J-45 from Fla to DC. It's my son's guitar. A couple options:

a.) FedEx
b.) UPSP
c.) Hop on a plane and deliver it myself
d.) any other option I haven't thought of

FedEx. Loosen the strings at least two full turns of each tuner button.

Wrap it/pack it well (double box). If shipping in a case, pad everything with bubble wrap.

Insure it.

Ship it.

Always best to create a pad to go behind and on top of the headstock to prevent "whiplash" if the case flops down from standing on end. If the guitar is not snug in the case add packing there too. I've shipped many high end Taylor and Gibson guitars this way and never had a problem.

Insure it! Yes!

And be sure to remove the strap end-pin at the tail end of the body.

And by the way, what is it you mean by UPSP?

Edited 'cause you're not the only one with an extra thumb on the keyboard. My bad...

My bad. I meant UPS.

I prefer FedEx, and have a store not too far from me. I've always been happy with FedEx.

However, the last guitar I shipped needed to be insured for $2000. They told me that they could only insure it for up to $1000.

I was later told that a "franchise store" could limit what the franchiser wanted to insure something for. The implication was that a company store wouldn't have such a limit. Don't know if that is true or not.

I also have a new UPS store near me, and will probably give them a try next time. My local Post Office has made it pretty clear that they aren't interested in shipping guitars and have made it cost-prohibitive.
