Hello there, I've got an interesting question...since the majority (including myself) of people dislike the drive channel on the HRD, is there a way to make the "drive" channel a secondary clean channel with a master volume? So essentially you would have your first channel the normal one volume channel and the second (drive) channel would be an exact replica of the clean channel but with a pre & post volume? That way you can set your clean volume at a level and when you channel switch its just a crunchier version of the clean channel. I've already doubled the capacitance in the first filter stage, clipped R105 reverb mod and replaced the plate load resistors. I'm thinking about doing the Negative feedback mod with the 50k pot for adjustable or just clip R69. I really like this amp for the pedal platform that it is and I'm determined mod this to perfection...and essentially end up doing a complete PTP transformation. Thanks any info/assistance/opinion/help would be appreciated.

Yes.... Fromel has the mod to do it. Basically, you're creating a semi Deluxe version of the ML HRdeville ... although the ML HRDeville has additional mods from the factory (like a different slope resistor value etc, making it a different tone stack from normal devilles and deluxes)

None the less a great idea. been wanting to buy a used HRD and do that mod because I love my ML HRDeville which really doesn't have a master.

With the right resistor values and some good quality coupling caps like Orange drops, Malory, Silver Mica and some F&T electrolytic's you can turn that Drive channel (and the whole amp) into a "Great Amp!" lots of potential in a HRDeluxe. I have a HRD III with Orange drops, Malory's Silver micas, with resistor mods/values changes.

The Drive sounds above the bar. I also have an Eminence Texas Heat in and I put a 12AY7 in V1 The 12ay7 wasn't to tame the volume (the HRD III has a better audio pot)I found that the 12ay7 really helps the V2 12ax7 the Drive channel bloom. (not to bright or harsh yet not to woolly or frizzy)

because of all the mods... I'd put my HRD Deluxe III up against many Boutique amps in a blind test anyday.

Yeah thats all the direction I'm going, thanks for the info! Also I'm interested in what the mid mod would do because right now I'm getting a kind of barky/honk on some voicings and notes. I was excited and dissapointed when the ML HRDeville came out becase thats exactly what i'm looking for...just dont want to pay $1000+ for it. Pcalu would you mind expanding on the values/resistors that you changed? Any info on the negative feedback?

These HRD 3's are really great amps, stock they sound very good and have nice low end with single coil's. I can see the temptation to modify or change out certain components, but they are very playable. I have a Carr Rambler [boutique-ish] that is very good at what it does and nice to have tremolo set low for ambience. However the HRD which I play clean with a bit of reverb never disappoints playing clubs, bars, roadhouses, concert stages, I never use pedals or effects. I had an earlier version but like these 3's just a bit more. Most amps have there quirks and need some TLC from time to time, these are no different, I enjoy that there are people who can change up the character of amps thru creative and musical electronic know how. I played an outdoor concert for 40,000 using a 45 watt S.S amp and believe it did just fine.

Here is a breakdown of what was done to the amp.
(I did some and then had a great tech from my area do the rest)

r12 r4 r11 r16 r 22 ans r 58 100k .5watt metal film

r57 85k .5 watt metal film

tightens up the base and mids and better defines the high frequencies

coupling caps

c27 .1uf
c5 .1uf
c6 .002uf
c7 250pf
c11 250pf

c24 .022uf

c2 .047
c10 .047
c18 .022
c23 .0022uf

Also was the electrolytic caps (same values)

Used was a mixture of Orange drops, Malory and Silver Micas.

Amp is super quiet and sounds outstanding. I put a Texas Heat in (by Eminence) 12ay7 in v1 12ax7 in v2 (the 12ay7 help on volume control but also colors to my liking the Drive) standard 12ax7 in the phase v3.

These amps have HUGE potential when you give them some love. Boutique amps like Hurrip's Carr Rambler have a refined tone (little things that make it shine) Once you give a HRD a work over the amp gets close in refinement to a boutique amp.
