I was in Rhapsody Music (no affiliation) in Mankato, MN, last week and saw what seemed to be a Fender amp I'd never seen before... the controls looked identical to the Blues Jr., but the cabinet what quite large, with a 10" and 12" speaker in it. The covering wasn't tweed - more like a beige or tan fabric (I think). It had a Fender badge on the front, but no other name... maybe it's not "real" but it looked like the real deal...

I didn't have time to plug in (wife waiting in the car - dang), and I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture - mostly because I don't want to tempt myself. Also didn't have a price tag on it.

I can't find anything like it on Fender's webpage or on MF's website. Anyone else seen anything like this?

Replacement cabs, applying a logo, etc..easy.

Wouldn't assume it was a new Fender, maybe a new "former Fender" or clone.

Yeah, I'm wondering if they took the guts out of a Blues Jr. and built this cab and threw on a Fender logo (from the old BJ cabinet...)

bluzcat,

YES! That's it - we have a winner folks!

Thank you for tracking that down... the one I saw looked like it was in pretty good shape - but didn't necessarily look new (didn't have the all the Fender tags on it, like 5 year warranty, etc.).

Not something I need for my collection, but it's there if anyone is looking for something like this in this part of the country...

I remember when those came out. They're really cool! If you get a chance to play it you'll have to give us a tone report.

So is it just a retro style Blues Junior? It seems that way.

stratluvr,

Yes... and No. It's the Blues Jr. head in a larger cab with two speakers - a 10" and a 12". I suspect (though I didn't play through it) that this combo in a much larger cab would address any "boxiness" complaints that some folks have about the standard amp...

That's a cool looking amp. I'd be interested in how it sounds.

I can't recall exactly when they came out but it would have used the first BJ chassis (and suffered the infamous reverb hiss) plus I believe they were pricey.

"and suffered the infamous reverb hiss"

Is there a Billm (RIP) mod to fix the hiss?

Hi reverend mikey!

Yes, BillM had a mod/fix figured out for the weak/hissy reverb in the early BJ´s - it´s on his site somewhere...

I had it done to mine (´95 tweed-model) and am very happy I did.
Didn´t cost a whole lot either ;-)

cheers - C.
