Wasn't sure where to post this... identity crisis alert!

I've been loving the 2 Teles I got recently so much that "Tele-fied" one of my strats.

I removed the middle pickup and re-wired with a 3-way switch.
I made a "dummy" pickup out of a old pickup cover to fill the hole, and adjusted it flush to the pickguard.

Two of my other strats already have 7-way switching so I can get the N & B combo with them, but I wanted something just a little bit different.

I'm half hoping this little trick will keep me from buying a 3rd tele (in as many months!)

I really like the sound of my new "Tele-Strat" in that middle position!

Very cool! Part of the reason it sounds quite different from a Strat is the lack of the 3rd magnetic field between the neck and bridge pickups.

I have one like that, but it's

decidedly more Tele than Strat...with a reversed bridge pickup.

Ah yes, I remember seeing that one.
A *true* Tele-strat!

How are those GFS Fatboys?
I've looked at them a couple of times, but never pulled the trigger.

Mick, while they sound Tele-like, the bridge pickup is not as piercing. The neck pickup is quite clear.

Added a pic.
Nothing special. Just an old dog with a new trick.

The Lace Hot Silver was in the middle, but I tried in the neck for this experiment and it sounds absolutely stellar in that position.

Happy result...

That looks sweet! Nice color combination.

I think it was Richie Blackmore who famously removed the middle pickups from his Strats and left the cover on there like you did.

Thanks P!
I shaped a piece of black pickguard off-cut and CA'ed it to the inside of the cover to block the pole piece holes. (got to keep those gremlins in there somehow!)

"I think it was Richie Blackmore who famously removed the middle pickups..."

I thought I was copying Robbie Robertson then realised he moved the middle pup right up against the bridge pup. I bet that would make for some unique tones too.

Richie Blackmoore of Deep Purple, Rainbow fame.... had all his strats wired this way. He had no use for the middle pick up

Mick,

I've wanted to try the Robbie Robertson Strat set-up for quite a few years... you've just reminded me of that...

"I've wanted to try the Robbie Robertson Strat set-up for quite a few years..."

Yeah, it piqued my curiosity too. I've got an old strat pickguard that I wouldn't be fussed about hacking up just for fun.

We'll see...
