Was practicing today and got to thinking about how odd it is that I have developed a decided preference for slender necks since pretty much giving up guitar for bass 2 or 3 years ago.

This is strange, because for years I preferred baseball bat guitar necks, the '59 rounded Gibson profile being about my favorite. I even liked the neck on a Silvertone 1427 (like a Harmony H62) I used to have and that thing had about the fattest neck I've ever seen on a guitar.

Now my favorite bass necks are those on my Guild Starfire and Fender Mustang, neither of which could be described as being the least bit chunky. Go figure.

How about you? Do you like pretty much the same sort of neck profiles on both guitars and basses, or not? Any thoughts as to why you've answered as you have?

My personal comfort zone is my '66 P bass.
Guitars are mostly wasted on me, but I do own a PV Patriot that is pretty much a Srat clone, neckwise.

The necks Fender made from early 1958 to 1961 are Fender heaven to me.

I have also played some Mexican basses from the 1990s that had very nice, comfortable necks.

Overall, I prefer wide and flat and of the P-bass variety.

On basses, I strongly prefer 1.5" nut width on fours, and I like what I believe is a "Modern C" rear profile like Fender's American Standards and recent USA G&L's. I also prefer relatively flat fretboards like the 12" radii on my G&L basses, though Fender's 9.5" is fine on fours.

On fives, the flatter fretboard is even more important, as is a thinner rear profile. I love the neck on my G&L M-2500.

My taste is similar for guitar necks, because I like the typical Fender American Standard Strat and G&L "Modern C" necks, the latter especially with a 12" radius that was standard until last year. However, I also like the slightly chunkier necks on Telecasters. They remind me of P-basses and just seem right on those guitars.

I've had so many different basses since 1969. My 64 P had a wide, but flat neck that was my favorite 4. Most have not been quite that wide. After I switched to 5 strings around 1990, I was pretty picky, but as the years have gone on, I don't really have a preference. My main bass the last 10 years has been a Line 6 Variax 5, and the neck is quite like a Lakland. My favorite, but the other basses I play are different. My fretless is very narrow. I have one that is extremely wide. It's all good.

Wide or narrow, 34 or 35" scale...it don't matter much. I am more concerned with action and feel. I roll the edges of all my fingerboards. That is a big factor, along with properly cut neck, leveled frets, nearly flat relief and pretty low action.

I'm decidedly not picky about neck profile for 4 string basses. When I'm playing I'm not really aware of the profile - probably my lousy left hand technique. They all seem to work about the same to me.

However, when it comes to 5 strings, that's a different story. I've owned about 6 different 5 strings and I've discovered that string spacing and neck profile makes a significant difference. My comfort zone on a five string is the Lakland standard neck, 35" sale with 19 mm string spacing. That really works well for me. Narrower necks (Musicman, for example) are very difficult for me to play.

I was looking at an aftermarket graphite neck for a project bass. Without having access to it to feel it for real, I'm trying to work out what it would feel like.

It's suppose to be a Jazz neck with

1-9/16 nut with
0.77 depth a the nut
0.88 depth at 12th fret
7.5" radius.

so compared to a Jazz neck (the project bass is suppose to be a Jaguar) it sounds like it would be:

- marginally wider than a Jazz of 1.5";
- very thin front/back (compared to 0.88/1.00)
- more curved (than a 9.5" radius).

I wonder how it would feel to play?

Early '60s P necks feel great to me nowadays.

I was a fan of the later '60s-very early '70s J neck in the past.

My favorite neck is a Fender American Special Jazz bass with Posiflex carbon rod truss system, rolled edges on Rosewood Finger Board with slim C 1.5" width at the nut.
