Forgive me for something of a double post ... mentioned this in the Lefty Forum...

I've been on the lookout for one of these and was even considering ordering a new one, then this one came up on the UMGF for a good price...

The 2012 D-18's got updated with some specs I like: 1.75" nut, ebony board and bridge, forward shifted, scalloped bracing, tinted tops and a few others.

I'll give a full report after it arrives...I'm pretty jazzed (or is that "bluegrassed"?)!

Congrats, Mikey!

I was looking for a mahogany Martin myself; started searching for a D-18, ended up with a D-18VS. Will post a photo soon, just got it late last week.

Same woods and specs as yours, but it's a 12-fret slot head.

What got me to looking was that I played guitar in an impromptu jam session several weeks ago (see my "Suzy Boggess" thread) at a ranch up near Yankton. I had my old Alvarez-Yairi, but traded it off to a kid that was playing his mom's D-18. So I played that Martin for an hour or so and fell madly in love with it, didn't want to give it back.

It was punchy and loud, just like it's supposed to be. Great guitars!

LOL, I just popped into the Lefty Forum to check out your other thread. Never been there before.

Man, you and LRO pretty much have that place to yourselves!

Yes, the 2012 (& on) D-18s are fantastic dreads. As long as you're comfortable with the neck carve and 1.75" nut you could have a real winner.

Ragtop, yes, it's way too quiet over in lefty-ville... I suspect the current economy has taken it's toll on many of us just like the rest of the gear world...

Viera, the wider nut is one of the features I really like. When I got my D-35 last year, I almost ordered one from the custom shop just to get that feature.

When I found out that custom shop Martin's don't get a model designation, I decided to stick with the standard D-35, since one reason I was ordering was because it was the 50th Anniversary of the model and I wanted that designation ("D-35-50") on the guitar... shallow, I know, but it's a little piece of history.

The D-18 and D-35 should complement each other nicely. FWIW, I prefer 1.75" wide nuts. Enjoy both.
