Are there power outlets in Heaven?
Oct 17th, 2016 07:59 AM   Edit   Profile

Just picked up a mint used 68 Princeton Reverb Custom; as an option I also bought the Celestion Gold 10 for $125. I played the stock speaker for a couple of weeks prior to installing the Celestion Gold just to have a point of reference. The stock speaker sounded really nice to my ears and I wondered if the Celestion Gold would really be worth the extra money. I finally swapped out speakers last week and am very impressed with the Celestion Gold; it seems tighter and a bit smoother, maybe not quite as bright as the stock Celestion V10; It has a bit more power handling and seems to give it just a touch more headroom; It really shines at volume 4+ when you get that slight break up from the power tubes. I'm in heaven with this amp. I have a 65 DRRI, Blues JR with Bill M. Mods, Superchamp XD with a Rajun Cajun speaker, and a 63 Valco Supro all stock except the preiod correct Jensen speaker upgrade. I seem to gravitate to the 68 PR Custom more than any of them.

Play it some more, a lot more and the speaker may find its groove.

If you want to stay closer to the vintage sound but with better punch and openness but still warm with good breakup try the Weber speakers. I recently obtained a Morgan PR12 (Boutique Princeton clone) with a 12" Weber and was amazed at the sound.

I've read alot of good things about the Weber speakers. I'm looking for a replacement for my 65 DRRI and may go with a Weber for that.

I've got a Weber alnico 10 in my PRRI. It sounds fantastic.

Back when I had an early model Super Champ XD I swapped in a Celestion Gold 10 and the improvement in tone was very apparent--especially at gig volumes. That was a kickin' little combo.

Peegoo, I just got rid of My Super Champ XD with a Rajun Cajun in it. Now I want another. Note to self, purchase gear and NEVER sell it.

My favorite speaker for the DRRI is the Celestion Blue. Weber Blue Dog is considered very similar. Jensen P12Q also sounds great in the DRRI.

I've had a few DRRI's and tried lots of speakers in them over the years. Last DRRI I had was all stock with a well broken in C12K. C12K get thumbs down, but you got to break it in good. It sounded as good as a Weber 12F150. Very, very close

I've got a 50's Rolla in the DRRI now. Sounds pretty good. I may try putting the stock C12K back in it and break it in a bit more.
