FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Stratocasters / Thoughts on the 2016 Channel Bound American Standard

Oct 12th, 2016 05:33 PM   Edit   Profile

I kind of have mixed feelings on this guitar. Other than the binding it's just a American Standard but something about the look of it doesn't seem very Strat like. Anyone else have the same thoughts on this?

I think they look great, but not sure I'd shell out the extra $ for it. To your point, they're an American Standard, which are great guitars.

To me, "Strat like" can mean a G&L or other solid body guitars with 3 single-coil p/ups and a bolt-on neck. So to me, it's certainly "Strat like." Something like the Aerodyne or Showmaster represent a more drastic departure than the Channel-Bound American Standard (to me anyway).

On the other hand, if you think of the Stratocaster as a solid, reliable, serviceable, yet aesthetically un-refined instrument, with a genuinely unique sound, then yeah - I see your point. The channel-bound is simply more aesthetically refined.

How's the tone? Isn't that really the main thing?

OP is asking about whether or not "the look" of the guitar makes it less "Stat like." As with any American Standard, some will sound (and play) better than others.

I'd be quite surprised if anybody can present an argument that the channel-bound neck has any effect at all on "the tone" of the guitar. It's simply window dressing.

And yes - tone is the main thing. But that's not what the OP was asking about.
