FDP Forum / Amp Mods, Repairs, and Projects / 5E3 Deluxe sudden volume gain

Cleaning the pot didn't solve the problem of intermittent volume gain from 1-2 on volume to what sounds like 8. The amp has been doing this 5% of the time for a year now. Can't gig with it and it is my best sounding amp. What components to check before changing out the pot?

An intermittent connection between the affected channel's volume pot track and circuit 0V seems a likely cause.
Bad connection may be due to a loose terminal on the pot, bad solder joint etc.

Checked the pot to chassis connection and there was some corrosion on the underside of the chassis. Tightened it down after cleaning (steel wool) and it's been good so far. Guess there was enough corrosion so volume wouldn't bleed to ground. I suppose cleaning that connection every 61 years is a good idea anyway.
