Hi

I've always played strats with 57/62 Pickups. I like them.

I recently bought a 2001 American Standard with the stock pickups.

What are the difference between the 2 pickups? I feel like the pickup in the Standards a re a little hotter. Is my assessment right? For those knowledgeable does it make sense?

Thanks

I love 57/62s and have a set fitted to an MIJ '66 RI Strat. I also have a 2008 AmStd with the factory fitted pups. The AmStd is overall edgier and brighter sounding compared to the 57/62s. The 57/62s are warmer with a more rounded tone to my ears. The AmStd pups IMO don't seem hotter in comparison; to my ears they live in a slightly different frequency range, more treble I think where the 57/62s are a tad more mid focused. My assessment may be inaccurate but that's how my brain perceives it.

Definitely prefer the 57/62s through clean toob amps, to me it provides a fine example of classic Fender tone ('specially through a '57 Deluxe RI or PRRI). Saying that, the AmStd pups can be pushed to sound close with tweaks of the guitar and amp tone knobs.

I had 57/62's stock in my 60th anniversary classic player strat. I found them to be unbalanced in tone especially noticeable in the #2 position. The 2nd string tone seemed more muffled with less output. I also found them a lot lower in output compared to my 2008 Am Std with stock pups.

They sounded nice just a little uneven to me.

FWIW, it seems the Fat 50's pups that come with the current MIA Standard Strat could be thought of as a halfway between the previous stock AS pup and the 57/62. IOW, a slightly hotter, thicker version of a classic vintage tone. I don't have enough experience with any of these pups to say, but that's what I gather, anyway.

Telegib, never had that problem with my 57/62s. Over time I've done some minute tweaking to get the balance between the strings for each pup and between each pup as perfect as possible but certainly no unevenness as you describe.

I also have a set of Fat '50s factory fitted in an AmStd Strat. Great sounding IMO. Can't really say which is better to my ear between them and 57/62s. I like both equally.

I liked the Fat 50's pups that I have tried. As for the 57/62's I may just have a not so good set. As I said I liked them but found them hard to dial in.
