"That would be a deal breaker for me."

Don't worry about it. 'Cause in another 2 years or so, the "American Professional Series" will be discontinued to make room for the Fender "Cosmic Connection New Century" Stratocaster.

Just hang in there...

Received the "Sweet Notes" mailer from Sweetwater yesterday. Contains ad for the American Professional Stratocaster with some of the specs mentioned in bmeredith's post. No mention of fret size. Price: $1,799. That puts it in the price range of the Elite series.

I'm already saving up for a Cosmic Connection New Century Strat.

Good Lord! $1800 for a basic USA Strat? When the FDP started they were, what, $600-700?

Hmmm ... Mass Street Music had them up prematurely on their website then took it down. You can do a google and look at the cached site ... the price they advertised was $1,399 which is a $100 increase. I think Sweetwater's price may be wrong.

Fender Electric Guitars - 2017 American Professional Stratocaster - Sonic Grey

$1,399.99

This Fender - 2017 American Professional Stratocaster, here in Sonic Grey, is the latest edition built for the 2017 American Professional series. Featuring re-voiced single-coils, developed by pickup master Tim Shaw, these brand-new V-Mod pickups are specifically voiced for each position with mixed alnico magnet types. These new Shaw pickups produce powerful, nuanced tones that retain the vintage warmth and crisp highs that make for a quintessentially Fender sound. Further electronic upgrades include a treble bleed circuit which helps maintain the high end when turning down the volume knob, letting that Strat tone shine, no matter the gain level.

With an Alder Body in a Sonic Grey Poly finish and a Maple Neck with a Modern "Deep C" profile, this 2017 is ready to carry the mantel of American Professional into the New Year. Includes an Elite Molded hardshell case and a free setup to your specs from our luthiers.

Alder body with Sonic Grey gloss finish and 3-Ply Parchment
25.5" scale length
Maple neck with Modern "Deep C" profile
Maple fingerboard with 9.5" radius, 22 Narrow Tall frets and Black Dot inlays
1.685" Genuine bone nut width
3 V-Mod Single-Coil pickups
2-Point Synchronized Tremolo bridge with bent steel saddles
5-way toggle switch with Master Volume and 2 Tone controls
Fender Standard Staggered Cast/Sealed tuners
Elite Molded Hardshell case included

I'm not usually a fan of the recent Fender color selections, but that Sonic Gray looks pretty cool.

The Antique Olive is nice, too.

Looks like the SSS version sports a black pickguard, the HSS keeps the standard white.

That does it for me, I'm going the Classic player 50s, When they're back in stock. It will be good enough for me with a pup change (If needed). Rest looks good imo.

"The Antique Olive is nice, too."

I dunno...a little bit too GI-Joe, for me. YMMV...

The Sonic Grey works, though.

"I'm going the Classic player 50s"

Certainly a good choice. The link you posted does have one in stock that is Shoreline Gold. That one looks pretty good with some really wild grain on the neck. That would be cool!

Couple hundred more typically, but California is not a cheap place to do business in, and well...Fender's paid the price for staying.

I remember my first visit to the factory in Corona with Doug Mills (then VP) showing me this incredible paint booth system they had to install to recover fumes from all the guitars they were spraying. I told him they should move to Idaho where we didn't care about stuff like that. This system cost a bloody fortune as did all the other regs they had to deal with.

Fender AU updated their site overnight with the new Pro Series, and yesterday I got an email from an Aussie retailer with the first batch here...

I like the look of the Sienna Burst the best, but they're well & truly out of my budget.

Besides, with me "behind the wheel" it wouldn't sound *any* different than my MIM and import guitars!

;^)

"Gone from the Fender website as of today."

As most of us suspected (and made jokes about), there is no sudden disappearance of the American Standard/Series/Professional (choose whatever name suits you for now and going forward) Stratocaster (or Telecaster, or, or, or...). Some tweaks, for sure. But hardly what you'd call a giant game changer.

It will be interesting to hear from those who get to play them soon, what these new pickups sound like. Personally, much of what they are pitching in these new Professional models are just how I've set my guitars up over the years. So no big need to run out and buy one of these.

So I too will be "...saving up for a Cosmic Connection New Century Strat." Maybe I should have trademarked/copyrighted that name? Hmmmmmmm...

BTW the old American Standards showed back up on the Fender site after a couple of days. Looks like you can still order a 2016 AS from Fender for $1099.

"Details are starting to leak out on this model. It's going to be called the "American Professional Series"." - bmeredith

This would seem to imply that all prior Strats were for amateurs. Marketing BS. Glad that I took advantage of the deal on American Standards being discontinued. :)

I understand, and have been told by the music store guys that 2016 is the last year the American Standard Stratocaster with medium jumbo frets will be made. They are now moving toward the thinner/ higher frets and that is what will be offered from now on under a new name and the price is going to jump up considerably. I just bought one, didn't like the thicker, almost block-like neck and sent it back. Probably going to buy an Eric Johnson Strat with 57 deeper body cutaway, beautiful no skunk stripe neck, and bound rosewood fingerboard. The headstock is straighter and has tapered height tuners, so no string tree is needed. I played one, It also has Eric Johnson's pups, tone mod wiring for great sound. As close to a 57 Strat as you can come, but better.

Combined with the treble bleed I love the sound of them. I find them to be clear and consistent whether played clean or with distortion.
