I decided to swap out the Blacktops for TV Classics. First let me say that the Blacktops are not bad pick ups, but are a little too mid focused for me. I find the sound of TV Classics to be very well balanced and super clean and crisp. However, I found the TV Jones recommendedpick up height settings to be too bright and Trebly for my taste. Using the recommended settings makes the bridge pick up overpowering ( much louder) than the neck. I balanced the volume between both pick ups which basically required the bridge and neck to be set about the same height of 7/32 basically the range TV Jones recommends for the neck pick up. For me this works and most pleasing to my ears. I also set my Tele pick ups at the lower side, especially on the bridge. I am still making some fine tune adjustments to the pick up heights as well as the pole pieces which are very sensitive. I usually do this over the course of a few days to give my ears a fresh listen from day to day. For me this method works the best.

The Filtertron is my favorite pickup.

TVJ makes superb reissues; they are very faithful to the original design--and his QC and consistency of tone is way better than Gretsch's ever was. I have TV Classics in three guitars and they are the bee's knees. Twang, growl, and roar all in one pickup.

The original FT pickups often vary quite a bit in tone and response from one pickup to the next.

I agree that the blacktop isn't a bad pickup, but I also went the TV Jones route in my G5422T.

I decided on the SuperTrons rather than the Classics, as I thought they might suit my tastes a little better, but most people seem to love the Classics.

Enjoy that Gretsch! I love mine.
