FDP Forum / Fender Amps: 1985 - Current / DRRI Alnico Blue origin

My 2010 Electric Blue DRRI has an Alnico Blue speaker. I've researched but can't find a definitive answer as to whether the Blue was made in the UK or China. Anybody have info? (I'm just curious and don't care if the China version is every bit as good or not.) Thanks!

Hi alnico357!

To the best of my knowledge, the Blue AlNiCo is still being built in the UK.

cheers - C.

How does that Alnico Blue sound in your DRRI?

I had a Weber Blue Dog in my DRRI for a while and it sounded good. I think the Blue Dog is based on the Celestion Blue spkr sound if I'm not mistaken. Really good speaker. Very tight. Mine is the 50 watt version. Lots of headroom.

DanL, The Blue is very efficient so the DRRI can get louder before distortion, which I like. Distortion can be easy to get at only 22 watts. Compared to my former 1966 Deluxe Reverb, my reissue is a better live amp. I attribute this to the speaker. The '66 could not stay clean at gig levels.

Does it lose it's "Anerican Flavor" with the Blue (becomes more British sounding)?

I have a PRRI with a Celestion Gold. It still sounds like a Fender Blackface amp but with fuller , louder and sweeter tone. It's the circuit that defines the tone and a speaker can only enhance or slightly color in my opinion. You can't convert a Fender into a Vox with a speaker change.

I did an A/B test comparing my Weber Blue Dog to an Eminence Cannibas Rex speaker in my DRRI. Both sounded good but the CRex stole the show for me. Ended up w the CRex in the DRRI and I couldn't be happier.

Did a similar test w my Peavey Classic 30 amp comparing a Celestion V30 vs. the Weber Blue Dog. The Blue Dog won that battle and sounds great in that amp. Just perfect. I put the V30 in a closed back which works sounds amazing and can be used with either amp since all of my speakers are 16 ohms.

Nice when things work out!

For clean sounds, the Blue is my absolute favorite speaker in the DRRI, very sweet and musical. Jensen P12Q is second.

I have the Jensen P12Q in my Bordeaux Blues DRRI and it is spectacular. I have a Celestion Blue in my AC15HW1. I haven't switched out the Blue for the P12Q to compare but only because I am so satisfied with the Jensen.
