Today is the day.

Thanks for this, otherwise a lot of us, me included, would not have known about today being his birthday.

I don't know a lot about Keith's playing outside the few Fabulous Thunderbirds albums I've enjoyed. He had a remarkable talent for a solid, fundamental playing style that never strayed outside the song or the band, in other words, the essence of what it is to be blues bassist.

He was especially fond of single-coil 50s Fender basses and was often pictured with a very old plank bass in see-through blonde. If anyone knows anything about this bass, it would be a nice post for those of us who like the old ones.

Detlef Schmidt, who for a long time was a member of this forum, published a biography of Keith in 2014 titled Keith Ferguson: Texas Blues Bass, but I'm not sure if any copies are still around.

It's not only available, but the second edition came out recently. Detlef cleaned up some typos and minor errata, but also expanded the content - more photos and even a section showing the book launch in Austin October 2014. I was at the launch and got "tasked" (hahaha) with wrangling all the Keith basses onto stands and keeping watch over them as people posed next to them. Several slabs, plus a Harmony batwing bass, I'll have to find some pics to remember it all. It was a fabulous event - even Keith's mom was there, past 90 and sharp as a tack.

I liked his work with The Tailgators. It was raw and rough, but really great stuff. Party music all the way. RIP Keith.
