Seems like a simple thing, but I don't have much luck with belts.
Typically, I try to get something inexpensive and end up with junk.
I have had some belts start to crack after a few wearings. Turned out they were not 100% leather. On the other hand, I don't want to spend $50 on a belt.
Right now I am looking for a simple, thin, functional belt with a small buckle. I go untucked essentially 100% of the time, so it does not have to be a fancy looking belt. Anyone have a go-to brand?

You probably wouldn't wear what I wear (surcingle and other embroidered cloth belts).

There really is no shortcut, I've found. Cheap belts never last, a good leather belt in the $40-50 range always does. I like Johnston & Murphy, but Wilson's Leather has nice ones too. Wilson's is more likely to have a sale making a $50 belt closer to $30.
Another good place is a shoe site, shoebuy.com. They carry the J&M, but also they typically offer a 20% off coupon. So this belt, which I have owned, goes from $49.95 to $39.96. Not great but $10 is $10.
They may have other quality belts at a cheaper price point also. A 20% discount is always good, and it's not a place you'd think of for belts.

Chris
I do go preppy, just not Brooks Bros extreme.
Those belts look like a walking seafood menu :-).
I actually like the overall design.

Also, never get a reversible belt unless you have to physically remove, turn and replace the buckle. The ones designed for the buckle to just spin around always fail. Plus, as careful as you may be, you're probably scratching the brown side when you buckle on the black side.

Believe it or not but I still have a leather belt that I got for high school graduation ('67). It is a size 28 and somehow it has stayed with me all these years. It is packed away but I ran upon it about a year ago. Just couldn't toss is.
I'm not a stickler on brands of belts but I used to like the Tex-Tan belts.

RK, you can get these surcingle/fabric belts in solid colors too. Fine for khakis and jeans. Suits, not so much.
I don't think you can get a decent top grain leather belt for much under $50 unless on sale. You might shop LL Bean, Land's End, and Orvis as all sell decent clothes.
And for the record, while I mostly wear Brooks Brothers OCBD shirts, I don't have any of their belts, pants, or shoes.

Insist on Dayco or Gates for long-lasting engine timing belts. :^)
I'm wearing a leather Dockers one my wife bought from Kohl's. Made in Guatemala. Normally, $30, but she's one of those weirdos who use coupons, and got it for $12.

Charlie-
I bought a Dockers belt. Started cracking.
Noticed it was leather outer, synthetic inner.
Inner cracked very quickly.

Take a piece of 10 oz vegetable tanned leather, best is a piece from the back running parallel to the vertibra. Set the strap cutter to the width you like, cut a strip long enough. Poke a few holes in it for rivets or Chicago screws, attach your favorite rodeo buckle, poke some holes in the other end approximating your waist size. Dye it and seal it with a good quality harness wax.
Or order a blank from Tandy with the hardware you need. Might cost you $30.00 with shipping.
I still have a hand tooled leather belt I made 25 or so years ago, I wore it all the time, rain shine, falling into the ocean etc.. I lost a good amount of weight about 6 years ago and don't wear it anymore, but I couldn't cut the belt. I have a lot of time into it's tooling, the belt would, still, easily hold my weight.

Personally, I prefer braces.
No more adjusting my pants all day.
They also help to control plumber's crack.

"100% top-grain leather" or nothing else. Everythign else is junk.
"Bonded leather" and "laminated leather" contain leather, but they are crap. Bonded leather usually contains a cellulose (or Chinese sheetrock heh heh) core, with leather glued to each side and an edge finish applied to hide the glue seam. Laminated leather is two thin finished pieces glued back to back with an edge finish.
The edge finish cracks through use and the glue bond breaks down over time.
"PU leather" is actually polyurethane plastic, known as pleather (plastic leather) in the bidniz. It is great for rain gear. As a substitute for leather? Nope.

But, as a vegan guy once pointed out to me while I was buying a leather belt, it is vegan friendly.
I responded "its ok, I wasn't going to eat my belt anyway" and walked away.

If durability is it's secondary function take a dried gator back, use the band saw to cut a strip following the scoots from the neck down to the tail. Grind the scoots down with an angle grinder, you'll need to attach short pieces of harness leather straps at each end for the buckle and buckle holes.
Attach your favorite Incan worked silver buckle and call it a day.
