FDP Forum / Fender Guitars: Stratocasters / V-neck American Deluxe Strat GAS. Opinions requested.

An online shop that I frequent has a 2013 Fender American Deluxe V-neck strat in black that caught my eye. I'd really like surf green but this one is sharp and I keep thinking about it.

God knows I don't need another guitar but I'm looking for feedback on this model if you own or have owned one.

I see Fender has discontinued them. The features of this model interest me: V-neck, 9.5-14 radius, contoured heel, locking tuners, etc. Not sure about the N3 pups, I've heard both good and bad about them so a pup swap down the road would be OK. It's the other features mentioned that interest me. Since it's online, I cannot try it out and there are none locally.

These are excellent Strats. I wish I hadn't sold the 2-tone sunburst one of these I used to own. I think the N3 pickups are really good and the S-1 switching allows you to get close to a humbucker sound using the bridge pickup.

"God knows I don't need another guitar . . . ." I've been thinking of buying another one myself, but I already own 7 Strats (including 4 American Dlx Strats). Help me! (:oD

I had a 2014. Loved the neck. One of the most comfortable 25.5" necks I've ever played. It's a soft V-neck, very nice unless you really don't like V-necks.

I didn't much care for the N3s. They did distorted stuff pretty well, but weren't very good for clean to edge of breakup stuff that I mostly play (IMHO). The only pup position that I liked was all 3 pups using the S-1. I didn't want to do a pup swap and already had 2 great Strats, so I sold it.

The V-neck is the key feature that draws me in on this used one. I've never been a big fan of the Fender Modern C shaped neck.

One other thing, this one weighs in at 8.0 lbs. A little heavier than I'd like but I remember cruising Sweetwater's website for Am Dlx strats and 7.5 lbs and up was the norm for these.

I have always been a fan of the Am Dlx series guitars. The N3 PUs are ok but I have swapped them out of both of my Am Dlx Strats. The S1 switching was removed also.

I like the soft V necks but don't own one. The Dlx series has the most comfortable Fender necks ever built IMO.

2013 in Fiesta Red.

Absolutely love it.

I used to own an older one (2005, I think). Nice guitar, love the neck but could do without the S1 switching system.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

What fret size was used on these? Love a compound fretboard and the soft-vee for cowboy chording is really comfortable. Especially if the neck profile doesn't get too thin.
So, does it have a hefty neck or does it go thin?
Would really like it to stay more chubby but if it stayed moderately thick with the radius flattening out, I think this would feel more familiar to my hands as thin necks and flat radius are not my favorite.
Thanks, Woody

Update: talks are moving along nicely so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on closing the deal on this black one as soon as today.

I was jamming with a different group last night and one of the guys has a 2014 Am Dlx V-neck strat in surf green. I told him I was looking at buying the used black one but had never played one. He was very cool and let me play his guitar for awhile. Very nice fit, finish and feel to it. The neck shape was a very soft V, thickness was not chunky but more body to it than the Modern C shape. Felt very comfortable and not unlike my EJ strat which I'm thinking of trading towards this deal.

I have a 60th Anniversary version, two tone burst. Working the knobs can produce a wonderful strat tone. Hands down, the best neck, (for me at least), that I ever played. I hope it works out for you!

The deal is done. The guitar has been shipped, delivered and is sitting comfortably in my neighbor's house still boxed. Me, I'm 6 hours away in Maine on vacation with the family.

Having a great time but anxious to get home Friday evening to grab the new guitar!

still trying to bond with my deluxe..i mean it's a great guitar...if anything, it's almost too easy to play :) might try 11's, still thinking about the pickups. i'm using it as my main practice guitar to break it in...one thing i noticed is the push switch with the volume down can act as a nice momentary ala EVH or buckethead :)
