I don't like the modern tuners. I don't like the modern C profile neck. I don't care for the two point trem.

I really like the vintage tuners. I like the big U profile neck. Better woods used for the old guitars. prefer the vintage finish over today's poly finishes. 1954 was my birth-year.

Give me the '54.

I reckon the 1954 player would choose the one they didn't already have - i.e. the 2016.

If Fender hadn't ever changed the recipe one iota (including the company ownership) I wonder would we still hanker after vintage axes?

They'd choose the one from 2016, to go along with their 2016 flying car.

Modern all the way if it were me in '54 (particularly the American Deluxe HSS Strat).

I've often wondered what my Dad would have thought of my PRS guitars.

He was born in 1916, and played Gibson. He preferred solid body guitars and told me... "You'll own a Gibson someday".

I'd love to have been able to show him the PRS quality and tone. I think he'd have liked them.

What if reversed this? That is if we could choose today? Say it's a just discovered cache of NOS '54s I'd take the 2016.

You have to get them in your hands and play them to make an intelligent choice!

Assuming both had a proper setup and same gauge strings, the '54 would of course feel different on the neck with the vintage frets. Other than that, there should not be a whole lot of difference once you start playing. What a testament to getting is so right at the beginning. Contrast a car: 1954 Chevy Bel Air vs 2016 Impala.

See, and I'm exactly the opposite.

And that brings us to our answer:
I think each individual likes certain things, so it really depends on the person's personal tastes.

All other things being equal, I would give the 2016 a slight edge because of the RW/RP middle pick up and slightly better shielding. Granted that they weren't using the high levels of gain that we are used to, it could be an advantage when dealing with other situations that would cause single coils to hum. Another thing is that some players preferred Gibsons over Fenders because of the necks (specifically the fret board radius). While still flatter than a Gibson, the 9.5" radius would perhaps have a larger appeal.

As all my Strats but the 2 FDP LE Strats are vintage style, I'd have to think I'd pick the '54 over a modern Strat.

Oh man, that would be a hard choice - the sheer playability and consistency and dependability of my 2013 Jeff Beck versus the crystalline chime of a 54 ...

Can't I have both? Please?

You get a run of the mill version of either, no 60 years of aging etc.

That's what to base it on!

My hands would choose most anything over the Modern C neck, but thats just me. Vintage frets and 7.25 for sure.

Yea, I'm in the transitional period, where player grade stuff of the vintage Strats and Teles and the like were around in abundance for not a whole lot (and the ugly duckling offsets were cheaper than beater imports), and having played enough vintage guitars....I'll take the consistency of a modern one every damn time!

Back in 1954, the only concern of the musician would've been "How do I land my next paid session?", and so the choice quite clear, the more reliable modern strat.

Tadeo Gomez carved some terrific necks. My '55 was wonderful. They had thicker blanks then as the string angle over the nut is greater (deeper contour from nut to headstock). A one-piece, old-growth, swamp ash body didn't hurt the tone any either, though only some of the '54s were one-piece.
