Hello all! I'm currently considering purchasing a 56 Tremolux locally. I've played the amp and it sounds really good. After looking it over it seems to have been re-tweeded and someone has harvested all the Astron caps. It way be a new board all together. I didn't have the chance to remove the chassis to check date codes but the OT is suspect, it has bell covers. Shouldn't it have the paper forms exposed? Speaker is original.

Even with all of this, is $1800 a fair price?

Not sure if I would pay that much with all the stuff missing and a re-cover. Well, I know I wouldn't.

I'm not sure when the OTs changed from open paper to bell covers. Some never did! The last vintage tweed I had in the shop was a '53 Pro and it had the open paper OT. BTW the OT was one of the issues with the amp and it needed replacing.

I'll play a bit of the devils advocate on the amp your interested in. While a little high the price it is not that far off the mark even with the work done to the amplifier. If you like it and are buying it to play it and not as an investment what can it hurt. Get the price down a little bit and enjoy.

Before and after pics of the Pro I restored electronically are in my profile. BTW Fender tweeds of this era had a habit of blowing up the cathode bypass cap causing major damage to just about everything on the board if the thing wasn't replace in the course of maintenance. About the only thing I could save was the 4 tone caps. Everything else was turning to dust. I did save the board however I had to completely strip it to make repairs.

Yes, the output transformer should be paper wrapped with no bell cover. Are there any numbers on the housing? As for the Astrons, they are known to leak so, I wouldn't be too concerned about them. If the new tweed recover looks good and the amp sounds good, then $1,800 is a fair price.
