I went to Wildwood guitars here in Colorado, the largest Custom Shop dealer in the country by a lot. I finally bought a custom shop Tele! Yesterday I purchased a Postmodern tele. After A day at home with it I returned it. I had some gripes, not to do with quality just personal preference.

1. Guitar was 8 lbs, which is a pound heavier than I like.
2. The board changing from a 9.5 radius up to a 12 radius higher up the board wasnt to my liking either after some time with it.
3. The finish blonde/white finish just didnt look as good in person as in photos.
4. Wear on back of neck looked a little silly to me.
Sometimes a day at home with a new guitar can be very telling.

I didnt feel like I should have anything I didn't like with a guitar this pricey. I played every custom shop Tele they had, probably a dozen or more. I ended up with something unexpected but I am in love with it! 1962 Telecaster Custom Relic time machine in gold sparkle. I ended up going with such a bold finish because I think it screams Custom Shop!

I am lucky to own a 52 AVRI which is real nice and I always wondered if custom shop guitars are worth the extra money. The answer is no probably not, I can't say that it plays leaps and bounds beyond my 52RI but damn is it cool!

Always wanted a gold sparkle tele! Nice!

I'm with ya on the wear on the back of the neck looking silly, but it feels right. When I ordered my Nocaster I offered to send pics of my old strat's neck back--I didn't want a "sand-o-caster". Well, that's what I got, but it feels right and sounds right, and that's the most important thing.

I had mine team-built, and ordered a lightweight body, big frets, and some relic requests. So the look wasn't perfect, but the thing sounds like a beast. Prior to buying her I played a '52 RI and loved it, but I wanted larger frets and the store said gotta go CS for that.

This was 15 years ago, but at the time the '52 was $1069 and I think I paid $2200 for the Nocaster, so double the price--is it twice the guitar? Tough to say, but it is better. Usually once you get into the "good" to "very good" categories, it becomes a lot more money for something that's just a little better on a macro scale.

I have been blessed (or accursed) with good ears, and sense of touch, so the extra tone and feel are worth it to me, within a certain budget. You decided it's worth it to you as well. Don't expect me to talk you off the ledge, I'm an enabler!

Congrats on your find and purchase!

One reason for checking out the custom shop models was the larger radius fretboard and the larger frets compared to my AVRI 52. That being said the 52 isn't going anywhere. a 52 is $2000 right now new, is this guitar worth a grand more? To me yes, to someone who says things like "My MIM is better than any custom shop!" No probably not worth it for them.

Wow.

As soon as saw that guitar, the first thing that came to me is "This telecaster screams James Calvin Wilsey!"

Wicked indeed.

Nice. Never owned a Custom Shop piece before (well once briefly, but it didn't work out so I returned it). Would love to have the George Harrison Tele someday.

Sweet looking guitar, enjoy it!

Being that close to Wildwood is a blessing and a curse. I have a few guitars from there. I like to drool over their inventory.

"Didn't he say he returned it due to some dislikes?"

Maybe, but I read it as he returned his "original" purchase for the linked guitar.

Yes I returned a Postmodern telecaster and bought this instead. Only had the journeyman for 24 hours.

That's not a finish that I would have considered but it's gorgeous especially with the mint pickguard and subtle ageing.

Lovely flamed neck too.

It definitely has that 'wow factor'. Bring that to the next blues jam and you'll be the most popular dude in the bar. Everybody will be like, 'uh..can I touch it?.." You need to have a plan for that.

Dennis:

That Sparkly Gold Custom Shop Tele you got looks absolutely FABULOUS and has "Show-Biz" written all over it.

The "BIG DEAL" part of your post, to me at least, is in comparing the tone of this guitar to the tone of your cherished '52 AVRI.

I know exactly what you mean, my man, as I was lucky enough to spot a nice '52 hanging on a wall in a nearby Music Store, picked it up, plugged it in, and a little voice said to me....."THIS is THE TONE".

My '52 Re-Issue is a '96 50th Anniversary Blackguard with the sticker on the back of the headstock, and it has just naturally aged and relic'd so, so beautifully...

To this day every guitar player who hears it for the first time goes "WHOAH"..the tone is THAT unreal!!
