When I sin

May 18th, 2016 09:01 AM   Edit   Profile   Print Topic   Search Topic

I'm a lefty, but I followed the best advice I ever got when I started: play righty lest I pay through the nose and be confined to a ghetto of limited choice.

That may be the single best piece of musical gear related info I could have *ever* gotten. :)

Glad they offer something but I learned early in my life that I better learn to do most things right handed at least passably, since at the time there were no lefty much of anything.

And we won't get into lefty handgun carry driving a car!

The limited selection of gear does suck, but I have no regrets about playing left-handed. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still learn to play left-handed. But I'm pretty militant about that kind of thing. If it was good enough for Jimi...

They said they were rebooting the Design Your Own program on June 1, but the page looks like the same old same old today.

Anyone seen anything new here yet?

My local dealer told me today that as of August they will be part of the new Fender program. (I think he said it would be called something like "Mod Shop" - don't remember exactly. Sorry, Geezerdom strikes again.)

He didn't have details on what options would be available, but was hoping for a large color selection and painted headstocks. He thinks he'll find out more next week.

By the way, I'd say they're a medium-sized dealer. Not a custom shop dealer.

So far, I don't get it...

Looks like they've added Surf Green and Daphne Blue...but reduced the choices on necks, pups, and hardware...

Only one neck/headstock offered? Which they don't describe?

I must be missing something...

edit: also lost the ash/alder choice...now it goes by color...ash only for sunburst, alder only for solid colors...

why not offer a floyd rose? i mean they bought the company for some reason...i know i'm in the minority. love fender stuff, but frustrated they don't always have the options i want...probably better for me, or i'd have another guitar lol

I noticed the ash/alder thing, too, which is especially discouraging with vintage blonde (as transparent colors historically have always been ash.

IMO, it won't earn "mod shop" status in my eyes until you can order a humbucker in the Tele neck position.

The neck thing is weird. No options for shape, radius, frets, wood, headstock, or anything. They don't even mention it. Weird...

They bough Floyd not for Fender but for the stuff under the Fender umbrella that uses large numbers of them (the Charvels, EVH, etc).

Not impressed by the new thing, only difference is they're now claiming a 30 day turnaround versus 90.

$1650 for a "doesn't even really have anything I want" Strat...yawn.

i know they bought it for charvels, evh, but would it kill them to make a US model with a floyd?...and i know a similar model is covered by these acquired companies. But, do they realize the impetus of those companies they bought was the fact fender didn't offer the mod options people wanted? lol

So the new mod shop is worse than the previous one. Less options, less real choice, and huge price increase.
Typical.

I was hoping for more options, not less. Huge disappointment and a giant step backwards from the American Design Experience they were offering. Seems like nothing more than an overpriced Am. Std.

It is disappointing. They dropped the color I liked, the other neck options and (it looks like) the option to personalize the neck plate (which I would't do anyway). Fender just made this worthless to lefties...

But ... I didn't need another Strat anyway. And if I DO, I can get all this - and much more - from Warmoth (my go-to source for quality bodies and necks).

Meh...

Unimpressive. And, yes...you can do better building your own custom Strat (or Tele) from available parts, including Fender, Warmoth, etc.

Do I have this correct? You can't choose between alder and ash? It has to be ash? You can't choose a neck profile? You can't choose the fret style? You can't choose for vintage hardware?

This is lame.
