FDP Forum / Performer's Corner / Anyone using the Behringer XR18 Air?

We are considering moving to the Behringer XR18 Air so we can set the device on stage and eliminate a snake while mixing from the iPad.

Anyone know the range of such a set up?

About half our events will be outdoors while the rest would be inside the facility (theater and multipurpose rooms).

I have one Tony. I've only used it at a few gigs, but so far it's performed flawlessly. We used it as a sub mixer for the pit band in the musical I just performed in and it had ample range to reach the platform they were mixing from. Approximately 30 yards from the pit.

What I like the most about it is you can carry the equivalent of about 4 cases of rack gear in a piece of gear the size of a lunch box.

Edit:
I also set it up in my studio and was able to control it from any room in the house and could still control it outside the house as well.

A friend of mine bought one of these, and has used it t mix several gigs.

The Behringer name not withstanding, it's been great! There was a small learning curve, but even that was not significant.

I've already decided that if I ever need to buy a PA again, I'm going with powered speakers for mains and monitors and the Behringer XR 18 Air. It's just too cool and flexible to consider anything else.

Not to mention it gives you 18 channels of multitrack recording too.

I own one, a recent purchase. I love the thing. No more snake! Six aux sends! Very decent preamps! Excellent FX! It's a keeper.

Note: I will be adding an external wireless router before my next gig with it. I found that outdoors with a few hundred people around with cell phones connection was not the best and I'd lose contact with the stage. No big deal really as the mixer box keeps chugging along as lest set.

This XR18 is a great value for the money. It doesn't sound quite as good as my Mackie boards but not much in this price range does. It is more than adequate for live use. Just watch your inputs as the preamps can be overdriven fairly easily.

Good information. I appreciate the feedback from everyone...

I appreciate the comment about cell phones in the audience as we had not thought about that as an issue.

The venue I work for is considering adding to our Presonus 16.4.2 OR replacing the 16.4.2 with the XR18 Air. (I work at the local City government owned auditorium/conference center/multipurpose room/event center...actually it is the "old" high school" that the City got in a land swap with the school district.)

Hammond, I've seen information about cell phones and connectivity issues. If I remember correctly, Behringer recommends scanning the area with "Airport Utility" for wifi routers and pick a channel that is less crowded. I haven't had to do this myself yet, but will if the need arises. So far mine has been rock solid. I set my iPad so it will not sleep as well.

I am a true Luddite, so help me, even if the router is NOT connected to the Net, other wifi users can lock it up and interfere with control of the XR18 Air?

Tony, Only if they had the app to control the mixer and the password to connect to it. They can see the network on their device, but wouldn't be able to connect to it. The user has to WEP enable the router though as the default is no password protection.

Well, it was delivered on Thursday. I did not realize he ordered it. OK, new learning curve.

Played gig 3 with the XR18 this weekend. This time we played outdoors to a decent sized crowd and I did notice a little latency on the faders when you tried to move them. It didn't seem to be a huge issue as it quickly snapped out of it when I started making adjustments. I think the latency was due more to flipping between the OnSong app and the Xair app on my iPad.

Next gig I'm going to scan the networks that are competing with it and pick a channel that's less crowded. I noticed when I did a scan on Friday, almost all the networks it was seeing was on channel 1, the same as my mixers network.

I will say it sounds great though. Many compliments from fellow musicians in the audience and my band mates were complimentary of the monitor mixes especially.

Routers are relatively cheap. It's the best way to go for connectivity, security and distance.

I'm using a Dell laptop for control with an Android tablet along as a back-up. Overkill I know but I can sit at a table and use a mouse with the laptop......and see the entire board on one screen. It mixes just like my Mackies in this mode.

Love this thing.

I have a router that I can use, I just haven't tried using it yet. I'm going to look for a clear channel next time and see what happens. Next test will be this Friday.
