I bought a new Fender Standard Jazz Bass from Sweetwater. They said the do a 55 point inspection and setup. Always skeptical of buy online without playing the instrument first but this bass I (as far as I can tell) without flaw and the best I have ever bought (and equally as good as the Fender American Special Jazz and a 2004 MIA Jazz Bass I once had). Neck straight, low action, no fret buzz or noticeable dead spots, plays and sounds good. I have some Aguilar dual coil and Aero JB-4 type 1's. I was going to put the Aggies in it when it arrived but it surprisingly sounds good with the stocks. The cavities are shielded and very low noise when levels are not the same so I am going to leave these in for now and maybe always. Sweetwater is outstanding in Customer Service and fast shipping. I will not hesitate to use them again. Love the ability to look at photo's and spec's on the exact bass I choose. They sent an email with the photos of my bass. Now that is cool. My Gas now is in just playing and looking at it. I think it is absolutely beautiful to behold. Sorry, I digress with the tooting of the horn now. Note: the photos sent are very sharp but after resizing and cropping these are slightly burred.

The current (last few years) Fender stock MIM pickups are just fine. Setup/fit and finish are stupid good.

The MIM P Bass I won in a contest a year or two back needs *nothing* - it's good to go out of the box, period. Puts my beloved beater Squier MIM Jazz to shame.

My favorite instruments from Fender these days are all MIM stuff - they've got it right to a point where I just couldn't justify bulling the trigger on MIA stuff in my last high dollar purchases.

I hear you. I traded in 3 Squier Classic Vibe basses in excellent condition and my wife gave me $300 for my birthday in 2011 for a then new 2011 Fender American Special Jazz bass ($750 total)no case just a gig bag. Had to sell it about 2 years ago and knew I could never afford anything like it again. It was very good but no better than this new Fender Standard Jazz Bass. I am very happy Rev.
You are right they are crazy good!

At this point I have all my essential (past and expected) bases covered for things I like.

I have three moderately expensive instruments (1-2k), the rest are all < 500 cheapies.

And the cheapies and MIM stuff takes me to places just as good as my old "never will afford or justify again" vintage Fender stuff.

If they were doing something actually new with some of the models, offering improvements that were options over classic stuff (without wrecking the classic form/function/options), I'd love to go MIA Fender again occasionally.

But I won't complain much as long as the MIM stays this good!

Do'in the 5 string thing!

About two years ago I got an itch to get a P-Bass. I played several MIM versions and was very pleased with them. They looked good, played good and sounded good, what's not to like?

Was about to pull the trigger on one when I spied an ad on Craigslist for a 2012 MIA Standard P-Bass with case. They were asking virtually the same price as the MIM. When I checked it out it was pristine. Still had the plastic and sticker on the pickguard. It was a no brainer to pick it up instead of the MIM.

I'm really happy with the decision. While the MIM's are very nice, and a great value, there is a difference. This Am. Std. P-Bass is the best out of three American P-Basses I've owned. It is really good. It is my number one four string right now. Maybe the best P-Bass I've ever played, at least from Fender.

Congrats on your score on the Jazz Bass. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Bonkers, yes there is a difference. Carbon rods in the neck for stability (didn't have to tune but maybe every two weeks., nice tuners and bridge, rolled edges on the neck, truss rod T handle tool, and nice case. I would never knock an MIA typically but depending on the year the pickups were mediocre at best , example the 2004 MIA Jazz bass I had (as I am sure the MIM's were too back then. By comparison the American Special Jazz in 2011 had a better feel to the neck and the pickups were better than the MIA Jazz of that year. This one states on Fender's site that the new bass I just bought has upgraded pickups. I noticed the A and D poles are higher than the E and G for better balanced with the curvature of the strings to match the radius of the fretboard.

OK, so we're rubbing up against July.

Still enjoying this bass?

Maple board Jazz bass. Lovely.
