"It also depends what sound you have inside your head. If the sound coming from the guitar doesn't match that, why did you buy that guitar?"

For some players a guitar appeals to them in other ways--neck, balance, color, rarity, etc.

And some players change PUPs as frequently as some folks change underwear.

I use the stock ceramic pickups in both my MIM Strats. If you adjust the pickup height properly and use your E.Q. either on your amp or pedal(s), those pickups can give you any tone you like.

The pickups in my '99 MIM standard are stock and they've always sounded real good clean, slightly dirty, to full out distortion.

I tend to believe that the type of amp, amp signal, and/or effect signal colors the sound more dramatically than any pickup change could. Just my opinion anyway.....

Another question, can you mix alnico and ceramic in the same circuit??

I have a 60 buck indo strat that has two of my original MIA strat pickups, the neck and the Middle, I was wondering if I could pull those out and put them say in the bridge and neck and leave the middle stock??

Hey jay.
The short answer is yes.
The magnetism doesn't care where it originates.. The only two issues I can see might be the output and polarity of the ceramic.

Both of those should be able to be overcome by height adjustment (for output) and correct wiring to be in phase.

Hopefully someone confirm or correct my statements. :^)

"I've had maybe 100 MIM Strats..."

I'm curious--seriously--to know how you managed to have so many MIM Strats. Did/do you work in a guitar store, or have a really good relationship with the owner of a guitar store ("Take it home for a few days, bring it back if you don't like it.")?

Been flipping them for more than 10 years. MIM Strats are my bread and butter. I stock all parts, and have my work down to a very repeatable process. I don't do Epiphone or Ibanez.
