FDP Forum / Fender Amps: Vintage (before 1985) / recommended filter choke for '67 SF Showman AB763

Mar 21st, 2016 03:41 PM   Edit   Profile

I need to replace the output transformer and choke on my '67 SF single Showman.
I'm picking up a Mercury OT for pretty cheap but I still need a choke. (125C1A on the schematic).

Is the choke as critical to tone as say the OPT? Will a $17.00 Hammond be a decent replacement piece?

The choke in your amp is there to further eliminate AC ripple from the power supply. It's not in the signal path. It's in the B+ voltage supply. The right choke for your amp will have an inductance value sufficient to eliminate 120 and 60 cycle hum from the power supply. If you have the right choke, no effect on tone. If you have the wrong one, your amp will hum noticeably.

The Hammond with the right inductance and voltage rating for your amp should work just fine.
