I had a 3ply BWB black guard on a 62 Custom RI and I thought it looked pretty cool. Depends on the color of the axe and your own sense of aesthetics.

I'm shocked that no one mentioned the significant tonal differences that each pickguard offers. The black one makes minor chords even sadder and darker. The white one makes notes spank like Uncle Daddy at a family BBQ.

Silliness aside, I have a straight black guard (not BWB) on my 2-tone SB Tele with maple neck and I love the look.

My main Tele is a parts build. 3TSB, maple neck. I've tried parchment, black and tort. The black and tort guards sit in a drawer.

My rule of thumb for 3TB: if maple, black PG. If rosewood, tort PG. Simple.

I was watching a cheesy Moody Blues "live" performance back from the day and became infatuated with Justin Hayward's 67 3TB/maple Tele. You just didn't see many in that config. as most 3TB had rosewood boards. I built kind of a replica although mine has a ginormous baseball bat Nocaster type neck.

Both are nice, but I would go with the white.

If you were wearing a cowboy hat, would you choose black or white?

Go with the same for your pickguard, pardner. :O)

I dig a black pickguard on a Tele with a burst finish.

I'm staying neutral. Both guards look good on that one.

My sunburst MIM Tele has a white guard - I like it.
White pearl on the 'burst '72RI Thinline - also nice.
My buddy just put a black guard on his 'burst - looks cool.
All the above are 3-tone bursts.

But my favorite is the faux gold anodized guard on my 2-tone burst Esquire/Tele.
(and it's "faux" because the only real ones I've seen are around $75 and I just can't bring myself to spend that on a pickguard - besides, the imitation one looks just as cool from anywhere beyond the 6-foot range)

Here's a trick for you: don't like the plasticky high gloss, and wish you had a matte Bakelite guard?

Easy - remove it, then rub the glaze off evenly with the finest abrasive paper you can find. It takes just minutes and really adds character to the instrument. It's also reversible with rubbing compound, should you change your mind. But you won't...
