That's "New Lefty Guitar Day"! It's a Squier Classic Vintage '50s Telecaster

I wasn't planning on getting another guitar - I've been really trying to downsize (hah!).

Matter of fact, I'd gone to the local guitar shop to pick up one I have on consignment there - I'm giving two of my acoustics to Guitars4Vets.

But our local shop, in honor of February 29th, is doing 29% off on select items with green tags - and this Tele had one! I've looked at it several times - almost bought it once awhile back when they had it marked down to $320, but exercised self-control. But now, with 29% off the regular MAP of $399, it was even cheaper than that (you do the math...). I walked out with the guitar and gig bag plus tax for around the $320 price above.

The guitar is perfectly mint - a miracle for something that's been in two of their local shops for over a year, maybe two... I guess lefty players aren't as hard on things as some others. It was set up horribly originally, but I complained about it one time, so the guitar tech went over it and got it much better.

The body (pine) is very nice, and the neck is a nice piece of maple as well - no weird knots or grains like you see even on some USA Strat and Tele necks. And the glossy finish and vintage tint on the neck looks first rate.

I just took off the 09's and put on 10's, tweaked the bridge, neck relief (truss rod), and neck pickup (took off the guard to raise it a bit). I'll find out later when I get a chance to plug in how that tweak helped balance the pickup volumes...

...but this thing sounds so good in the bridge pickup alone, I'm temped to get an Esquire guard for it and make it a one pickup wonder! I'll also eventually upgrade the pots, but the bridge pickup sounds 100% vintage Tele! Twang, grunt, growl, but it can also be sweet when treated right.

I'll say more after I've played it plugged in - but so far I'm a very happy camper!

I should add - this thing is routed under the pick guard for a humbucker in the neck position - ready from the get-go for the ultimate tweaker!

So, as I posted in the Telecaster forum, I'm going to switch out the neck pickup in this - the only weak link on this guitar that I've found (maybe pots and caps - we'll see).

I'll be trying the inexpensive Guitar Fetish Alnico Fatboy. I'm hoping it sounds similar to the Rio Grande Vintage Tallboy that I have in my Warmoth build...that is one amazing Tele neck pickup! As thick and powerful sounding as any Strat neck pickup - better than most I've tried!

I've got an alnico Fatboy in the neck of a homebrew Tele and it reminds me of the Fender Twisted Tele pickup: almost P-90 like, with a tad more top-end. I like it.
