We're trying to nail down a version of South City Midnight Lady for the band. The original is in G I think but due to vocal limitations we are doing in E. Easy enough for the intro and versus and chorus. It's the lead and outro progression we can quite get down.

Anyone doing this, what is your progression for those parts. Don't worry about the key so much I can transpose it.

This tune was originally played in open G tuning, so it should be a piece of cake to transpose to E (tune to open E).

See tab on Internet. Lots there. Plus see lesson on YouTube as well.

The tab below is in G. So when you see the GCD just transpose to EAB etc.

Yes I know how to transpose, studies music for 5 years a very long time ago. And the verse and chourus are no brainers, it's the middle lead break and then the outro we are trying to nail.

Due to the limitations of doing it in E, you will not get the exact fingering and sound of G. The original for that outro passage you are talking about, uses the Aminor shape at the 2nd fret with only the 2nd and 4th strings held down, and that shape is walked progressively up the neck until resolve.

I don't know if it can be done exactly in E. I'm sure it can, but I've never had call to work it out.

The Middle lead part should be able to be done from E to D with the top e string lifted, while the second guitar does the noodle. Hard to describe with out viewing it.

We're not trying to do an exact cover of the song because of the vocal range and the fact I'm staying in standard tuning on stage. I've worked out the intro part so that's OK and the chorus and verse are simple chords. The crowds in the bar ain't gonna know the different ;-).

I've actually been playing E to D with a B bass on the A string with the high E lifted or playing the Gb during the lead and it's working, it's the outro that is really stumping us.

I just gave the recording a listen, and here's what I'm hearing in the outtro. These are the chords in standard tuning for the recorded key of G.

The slash chords show guitar chord/note played on bass:

C/E....G/F#

C/G....Bbmaj7

Eb....F....G

Try that and see if it works for you, then transpose to the key of E.

I'm not an expert in this stuff, but Tyrone Shuz beat me with his Nocaster a few times and some stuff sunk in :o)

HA Sorry Peego, just been up to my neck in aligators. Yeah think we have it worked out transpose your chords up there and gave it to the bass player and we should start working on next practice.

Thanks!

Wish I had his number, I got to watch Dr. John playing stand with Pat and Tom to the side of the stage before they went on. Nice guys!
