I've begun a new project as an off-shoot from the band I'm currently in. I play drums in the band however the guitar player and I are starting an acoustic duo. We see it as a dinner house and winery project. Classy with dinner jackets, slacks, maybe a bit of jazz. This will not be a jeans and T-shirt deal.

I'm looking for song suggestions, instrumentals. We pretty much have the surf genre covered so I'm looking for other tunes that were written this way or that possibly you have converted playing a melody over the chords. We may do some backing track stuff but want to keep it as earthy and wooden as possible.

We will have a few vocal songs but want to keep this an instrumental duo for the most part. Vocs will be used to fill requests when needed.

If I was doing something like this I would probably find some Beatles instrumentals by Chet Atkins and the like, so that instead of 5 minutes of solo-ing the 'lead guy' plays the vocal lines, then solos where needed.
For something totally different, check out the Alex Skolnick Trio. Heavy metal classics done in jazz trio style...the audience will never know the difference! :)

Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)
Can't Find My Way Home
Dust In The Wind
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

These are acoustic instrumentals I do, and they work well (as long as the audience can distinguish the song.)

swampyankee's listing of Moon Dance made me think of the acoustic version of Layla.
And Peegoo is correct with Little Martha. I play that one too (open D), and usually extend it, as it's only about 2:00 minutes long.

Some really good material here. Many thanks thus far.

I was thinking of doing AWB's "Pick Up The Pieces"

The trick is, if you're playing with just the guitar player, they're having to cover chords and melody. Something like PUTPieces has a pretty pristine single-note melody line, and might be tricky to adapt to a single pitched instrument. I guess it depends how clever and/or capable the guitarist is.

I don't play out but LHW has a great list. I do them all except yesterday. I do sing them but they are great instrumentals.

I would add "Wild Horses" by the stones too. Gotta have a 12 for best results. Two guitars might be as good.

Buck Owens' "Buckaroo" is a cool instrumental that works on both acoustic and electric.

Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun" works on acoustic too, assuming you play all the parts.

Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba" works as a instrumental too, assuming you can play the chords and the lead melody together seamlessly.
