A friend of mine who lives a few hrs away is offering me one of two guitars. I won't have a chance to play these before buying.
I would like all your opinions on wether either of these guitars are decent and work getting, and which of the too would most likely be a better guitar.

1. A 1987 MIJ 62 reissue custom deluxe Telecaster w/double binding. Candy apple red.
2. A 1997 California series Telecaster black with tele special Lollar pickups. Piano Black.
For those that don't know what a California series is, they were built in Corona , sent to Mex for finish work, then sent back to Corona for final assembly and suited with vitage style American hardware. It was originally fitted with Tex Mex pickups, and he installed the Lollar ones which I know nothing about. The originals are lost.

Thanks so much all, also this is my first post so hi!

I know very little about either of these models and hope someone can shed a little light on this.

You don't say how much money your friend wants for each of his guitars. The Japan 62 reissue will look sharp with it's binding and candy colour. The California Tele will say Made in USA on the headstock. That's a plus for re-sale IMHO. I owned a California Strat and the quality was very nice; but the guitar in question is no longer original with the changed pickups. It's a toss up as far as I'm concerned. Buy the one that plays the best and sounds the best.

They are each $500
If I could play them first I would but I can't.
That's why I'm really wanting some advice
from knowledgable people here such as yourself
who have expirience with either or both of these guitars.

Better is subjective. Two pretty different Teles. I'd likely pick the California over the Japanese one. Then again, I'm a sucker for candy apple red...

Edited to add that the MIJ necks are awfully nice. I have a MIJ neck from a Strat and it's sweet.

The neck radius on the 62 reissue is 7.25 while the California model is 9.5 if that makes a difference for you. Maybe you could play some models with each radius then go for the one you like the feel of. Both guitars are examples of well built models, the MIJ were made very well and I remember the California Strats being high quality. You will be happy with either, good luck buddy.

The double binding on the 62 reissue makes this particular model the more valuable of the two, in my opinion.

I'd go with 62 as the MIJ version is of exceptional quality and you'll easily recoup your money if or when you decide to sell it.

Are your prayer beads maple or rosewood?

Have not played either, but I'm a sucker for the double bound look. Plus the cool old school logo on the headstock. The MIJ will not disappoint.

If you want looker, get the 62. If you want a player, get the California w/ Lollars. I have owned a 62 MIJ Sunburst. Beautiful looking axe but the pickups left a lot to be desired.

"If you want a player, get the California w/ Lollars."

Good point. On the other hand MIJ has a reputation for great playability. Might take a pup swap though.

Me? I'd go with the California if for no other reason I don't care for CAR, even with binding.

I'd pick the Calif with the Lollars and 9.5 radius neck. But as is often suggested on this forum, just buy them both so there will be no regrets. You could always sell the one that is not your go-to after living with them for some time.

I'd go for the Cali as well. Don't care for binding on teles and have no real affinity for Japanese ones. Can't go wrong with either though at that price, provided they're not overly beat-up. Yeah, you probably should just get both.

Get the '62 custom reissue, change the pickups to Fender custom shop, and the saddles to brass and you'll have a great guitar.

Ok he said he has another set of lollars that he would throw in for another $50 if I get the 62 reissue. I mentioned the brass saddles and he said he would absolutely through a set in.

The California one already has the lollars and brass saddles in place.

Which of the two guitars in terms of materials and quality of build I'd better though?

I actually don't like the candy apply red with the binding that's turned yellow. I wish I could strip in and go for a natural wood stained look. Is this possible? It's pretty chipped up already.
I don't even care about resale. He says the 62 reissue feels like a 62 tele

You'll likely regret getting it, regardless of how good of a player it might be. Go for the California series Telecaster and be done with it.

Or get both :-)

Too bad you can't play them before you buy. Get the California for immediate gratification. It sounds like it is set up pretty well . If you don't like it swap it back to your buddy for the 62 w/ all the extras he is offering.

Are you crazy? I'm with Chris on this. That'd be a beautiful combo.

Had a Fat Cali Tele in Fiesta Red. Sad story follows.......

Lollars are high $ pups.

Tuff call.

If he's a pal, couldn't he send you both and you return the one you like less? Paying $30 or so for shipping would be well worth it.

Is it hard to strip a tele? I went up and bought both guitars.
Id have to admit this 62 reissue feels like the real deal. I have a friend with a real 62 tele so you can imagine the first thing I did yesterday. The similarities between the two was astounding. We thew pups in the reissue and it blew our mind away. I'm still in shock to be honest.
The California tele is another amazing thing. With the lollar pups, the replacement brass saddles it sounds and looks great. I almost walked away from the deal neither came with a case, and he wanted $700 for the Cali tele because of the lollar upgrade and brass saddles. It's in excellent condition, all except for one spot that has chipped paint front a hit.And he wanted $800 for 62 reissue. I actually almost left but then went out in my car and researched and realized he was if anything slightly under pricing what he could get. Anyhow I bought both cause I rewally didn't want to sit there and a-b all day, plus I wanted to rush to my buds place with the actual 62 telecaster .

No I have to decide which one to part with. Only because I prefer rosewood fretboards I may sell the California tele.

Nice! One way or another you'll have a great Tele. As far as stripping the 62 RI, it would depend on the finish. If poly or nitro over a poly undercoat then it might not be worth it.
