FDP Forum / The 'Pup' Tent / Is Duncan JB in KC Mustang regular or Trembucker spaced?

Jan 18th, 2016 12:11 PM   Edit   Profile

I just bought a Fiesta Red Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang. The bridge position Seymour Duncan JB is dark, muddy, undefined and compressed. I cannot currently get a satisfactory bright, cutting, crunchy overrdriven sound. It sounds as if the tone control is rolled back, even though it is dimed! I am considering swapping out the JB for something else, but don't know whether to get a humbucker with standard Gibson spaced pole pieces or a Fender spaced Duncan Trembucker.

The bridge on the KC Mustang is the Fender Adjust-O-Matic bridge, which is similiar to Gibson's Tune-O-Matic.

Does anybody know whether the stock KC Mustang is regular spaced or trembucker spaced? The PUP cavity route is very tight, so if the current JB is regular spaced, I fear a Trembucker spaced replacement will not fit.

Think I'd look into the pots & cap and see what's in it.

I've got SD JB's humbucker (Les Paul) & single (Strat) size and they were far from sounding dark or muddy.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

I may be late to the party, but if you get pickups with any tremolo, most of the pickups should be a 'F' spacing. This refers to the Floyd Rose unit and almost every trem unit uses that spacing. This way the pickup poles will align to your strings.
Sorry that no one had jumped in and addressed your question, but I believe that you will find a good amount of support for this comment.
On a lot of my guitars, I use a Floyd spaced bridge pickup and have better alignment there and will use a standard spaced pickup for the neck position with consistent string/pickup alignment. Even on some import tremolos, I will still use this formula as it is the pole pieces that vary slightly and not the pickup dimension.
So, I think you can feel confident with this idea.
Best regards, Woody

Are the F Spaced pups the same size as regular spaced; i.e., is the entire pup wider or is it just that the outside pole pieces are spaced wider. I am worried that if I buy an F spaced pup, it might not fit in my Mustangs pup cavity.

It's strictly polepiece spacing. The overall size of the pickup is identical to a "non-F" unit.

It will be a direct replacement with no modifications necessary.

Ironically there were some USA made Gibson guitars that needed F-spaced HB'rs. It was the Schaller bridged ones.

I don't hear a difference between regular & f-spaced pickups.
