FDP Forum / All Other Fender Guitars and Instruments / Pot values in Cobain Mustang?

I just picked up a KC Mustang with a Dunncan JB in the bridge and a single coil in the neck. The JB is really muddy and compressed sounding with no crunch or presence. I am wondering if they used 250k pots because of the single coil, which might be compromising the sound of the JB?

Its already lower than I normally set my pups. I am really surprised that it doesn't sound very good to me! I have a CP Jag HH with Fender Enforcer pups and it sounds great! My Mustang has the same short scale length, the same Fender Adjustomatic bridge, and the same body, neck and fret board woods. The Duncan JB is a highly regarded pup, so you would think that the Mustang would at least be in the same ballpark as the Jag? I was thinking the difference could be the pots. Since the Jag is a dual HB configuration, it probably uses 500k pots; whereas, the Stang has one HB and one SC, so Fender had to make a compromise on the pots. Maybe they compromised in favor of the SC and used 250k pots, which might result in a muddier tone for the Duncan JB? Whatever the reason, I can't get a defined crunchy sound out of the Mustang, but I get it in spades with the Jag.

It sounds as if the tone control is rolled back, even though it is dimed!

Are you sure a previous owner didn't screw with things?

None of this sounds right, even for a wrong pot.

Possible, but the PUPs look stock.

Can't tell what's going on under the hood though without looking.

Something sounds wrong is the thing.

Before you lift a screwdriver, test the guitar with another cable to the amp. Sometimes cables develop a resistive short that pulls the 'life' out of your tone.

If it's not the cable, try this: unsolder the signal line from the tone pot. Have a direct line from the volume pot to the output jack. See if that improves the tone.

If it doesn't, rule out the volume pot, then the switch, etc., in a similar manner.

You can also run the pickup directly to the output jack too. If that brightens things up, then you know something ee-vill lurks in the pots or switch.
