You recommended a GFS humbucking Gold Foil to me in a thread last week. Alnico or Ferrite?

I have the alnico version. Never tried the ferrite/ceramics.

Generally, alnico mags generate a broader, smoother response; ceramics are more focused sounding. But that's just me.

Ask a guy like Joe Barden, and he'll tell you it doesn't matter where you get your magnetism. What matters is materials and how they're assembled.

Thanks. It's not a big deal either way, I was just wondering what version led to your recommendation.

I've got one of the ferrite single coils in the neck of a tele, normal tele pickup in the bridge (I can't remember what). Peegoo described it pretty well, sounds great with a little gain, not as good clean. Not as high-fi sounding as the alnico, kinda raunchy in a good way. I've got a 4-way switch in this one and all positions are very useful, no big volume changes between positions. I think you'll be happy either way.

I concur.

The differences between alnico and ceramic are subtle enough that a person (even with very good ears) listening to you play could not tell what kind of mags are in there.

It's more a personal preference than anything else because these are passive devices.

The difference between alnico and ceramic in a speaker, however, is a whole 'nuther ball of wax because a speaker's coil is active. The AC current through the coil causes alnico to demagnetize and magnetize as it generates sound.

Ceramic mags don't do this. It's why alnico speakers 'compress' volume the way they do.

Do you guys think one might be a better choice than the other given a korina body and neck?

I did a Gold Foil (Alnico) in the neck position and a GFS Lil Puncher in the bridge on this one. It took some tweaking of pickup height to balance them out, but I dig it.

I'm flexible on the style of music, but I like barky humbucker tone. I don't own a Gretsch but I could dig it for sure.

My Gibson P-90s always seemed darker than this one is, but mostly I want to ditch the noise. For $35 it's worth a try!

Go with the alnicos. They are smoother, I think. Probably get you a Gretschier feel/response than ceramics.

That's what I figured. I wouldn't necessarily want "focus" anyway if the wood is too middy. Could be ugly or overbearing.
