I bought a cheap, Estaben "Amber Ice" acoustic at a pawnshop for $40. It's a jumbo type with gold hardware. I put in a better preamp and piezo, some light Elixers and played it in a single at the old folks home Sat.

Acoustically, it's rather thin and not compelling. Plugged in it's just fine.

I made a special soundhole pickup, with a couple Squier Strat pickups. I removed the high three slugs from one, and the slugs and magnets from the other, reverse wound coil and stacked them.

I ran this through a octave lower box into a bass amp.

Nice rig, and I got nothing but great comments on the appearance and tone of the guitar. Yes, even my old, wheelchaired fans noticed. The action is low, and the neck pretty nice. I did replace the plastic bridge pins with brass ones.

"I bought a cheap, Estaben"

As opposed to my really expensive Estaben? ;-)

Well, when they were selling them at all the Goodwills for a few years, they cost $129, but included an amp, a nice case, and a 10 CD teaching package.

Here's the stacked pickup I put together to get bass on the three lower strings on a separate output.

Estaben soundhole pickup.

I enjoy reading about your projects Steve.

Many would turn their noses up at an Esteban but you've picked a worthy score there and used it as a vehicle for your inventiveness.

God bless you man.

I just modded my working electric I call "the Beast." I replaced the middle EMG Select with a single coil with the top three polepieces removed and a separate output.

I usually use this guitar when I play solo. The piezos go into an acoustic amp and the PA, the electric pickups into a few pedals and a guitar amp, the MIDI driving a portable keyboard (usually strings or B-3) and now the low three strings into an octave below and a small bass amp.

The switching for the magnetic pickups was a standard 5 way switch, with a series/parallel push pull on the bridge humbucker. Since I'm down to the neck and bridge for magnetics, I did the Bill Lawrence 5 way, which offers a half out-of phase tone that sounds like the middle and neck, or bridge and middle strat tone. I like it. I may do another Strat that I have a Fishman in as well or my Tele with piezos and middle pickup or even both.

Slightly modded Westone.
