Yea or nay? Eh?

I'm installing it now while I have everything ripped apart..... I may as well hear what it sounds like.... But I'm curious as to what y'all think.

I have a Wilde L200TN in my Tele and it sounds superb without a cover.

Did it start out with a cover, or did it come uncovered?

I read that. Thanks.

Funny... I bought a Nocaster neck pickup the other day and now I have got the Original Vintage pickup back running, but with 450 fewer windings, and any shortcomings I may have made in my welding. I just put the OV back in without the cover, and I would say that it sounds half-way between itself (but with cover) and the Nocaster. It is a hair sharper than with the cover, certainly the highs are a tad stronger...... I guess it's that balance of frequencies which have changed. I think I prefer the 'sweetness' with the cover on, but I'll see... tomorrow.

If you're going for a beefier tone from the Tele neck position, stick a Strat neck pickup in there.

Most will fit a standard Tele pickup cutout without the plastic cover. If the pickup has bare windings, add several layers of cloth tape between the flatwork (top and bottom of the bobbin) to protect the coil wire.

This is a cool little trick Tele players have been doing for years.

Thanks, Peegoo. I won't do that right now, but will certainly keep it in mind. I'm all for experimenting with this thing. I think what I've done now is take off TOO many winds.

I wouldn't have thought of Strat pickups being "beefier" than Teles. The Strats are usually lower impedance, not that that's everything, eh?

The beefier tone comes from the wider coil on the Strat pickup. A Tele neck pickup coil is tall and narrow.

Wider still is the P90. Still a single coil, but really shallow and wide.

I haven't even got to P90s yet... a lot of that old (50s) Chicago blues stuff was P90s.
