Life gets in the way of my G.A.S.

I've gone nuts this week, but that's because the stars aligned...

I sold my Carr Rambler last week, which provided some funding to order a Custom L-05MT - "MT" is for "mahogany top"...

...so I just ordered an L-bodied Larrivee with mahogany top/back/sides/neck/body binding/tailpiece strip... basically everything on this guitar except the bridge, fingerboard and head plate will be hog - all the rest will be ebony, including the neck binding. So only two kinds of wood on this guitar (except for the bracing, which will still be spruce, no doubt).

I want it to look like a "workingman's" blues guitar...the fanciest thing on it will be the Larrivee logo on the headstock, and diamond inlays on the fingerboard. Open back tuners, ebony bridge pins, a "rope" herringbone rosette complete the picture.

THEN...

...a lefty electric Larrivee RS-4 was on e-bay for $650! It sold before I could get it, but then it was relisted, so I snapped it up this morning. The finish is Deep Blue, so no wood showing on this one, but for $650 I couldn't pass it up! I've had some sellers regret about letting my Root Beer finish RS-4 go last year, but that funded my D-35, so I was okay with it.

Again, selling the Carr made this all possible... I'm playing a lot more acoustic these days than electric...but the RS-4 will get some lovin' when it gets here!

mikey,

Sweet, but I think I remember how you said in another thread

"the current economy (MY current economy!) is keeping my GAS under control..."

funny how that can change in a heartbeat at times

Yeah an all mahogany has intrigued me for a while, the shop where I ordered my Larrivee from just got some in with a sunburst finish and they look unreal (see link)

how long a wait do you reckon you've got, been six months for mine and still counting

The price for the RS-4 sounds like a steal

Yeah, I wouldn't be doing this if I hadn't sold the Carr, and wasn't selling some other stuff (an Epi Casino, several other acoustic guitars).

That 00-40 has some of the character I'm going for in the one I'm having built - that's the "rope" rosette I ordered, and those tuners as well.

I'm planning on 6 months for the build - I was told by the local dealer it wouldn't take any longer than that...but it could take up to that long.

I debated going for some kind of "burst" or tint to the mahogany, but I'm going to stick with the natural color and let ti age on its own.

Again, cost was a consideration...I chose an ebony fingerboard/bridge/etc. because that's standard, and actually CHEAPER than rosewood - otherwise this was going to be all mahogany and rosewood. But because ebony is standard on an 05 series guitar, it's around $200 less!

I may be moving sometime in the next 6-8 months, so I'm starting to think more seriously about real downsizing of gear. Even if I downsize, I'll probably have 5 acoustic and 8-9 electric guitars... sheesh...

So after the sale, the seller contacted me and said he "forgot" to mention that he had done some desoldering of the controls (to switch it over to "vintage wiring"), replacing the original capacitors (the ones Larrivee uses are top notch). Also, he said his soldering skills aren't the best, but everything works. Still the original pickups and pots.

So he offered to knock some $$ off and or throw in some packs of strings (and he was already throwing in a leather strap). I'm already getting a great deal on this, so I didn't want to get too greedy, so I asked him to knock off $50 and throw in whatever strings, etc., he wants to get rid of.

So now my price is only $600 - unbelievable for a guitar of this quality (which I know first-hand because I owned one before).

Another reason I went easy on the seller is that he hangs out occasionally on the Larrivee Guitar Forum, and I've seen his posts there (including pics of this very guitar).

Should be shipping today, he said - I should see it late next week...

That little hole at the end of the fingerboard (which has a dark foam insert) is where you access the truss rod wheel; it adjusts with any small straight rod (like the long end of an allen wrench). I think Peavey used a similar design on the original Van Halen Wolfgang necks...only they left theirs open.

Pretty nifty, actually.

This was actually a custom color ordered by the previous owner, and agreed to by Matthew Larrivee; so this might be one of a kind... I haven't seen any other RS-4's in a solid blue color like this (the original owner calls it "Candy Blue," which fits).

Okay, it's now Wednesday, and the Larrivee hasn't arrived.

Using their tracking number, my tracking information hasn't changed for over 48 hours now. It showed the guitar leaving the St. Louis area early Sunday morning (around 1 a.m.), but nothing since then.

i just filed a request online with USPS for them to find out what has happened here. The seller should get back any extra money he paid for 2-day Priority delivery. I could have driven to St. Louis and back by now!!! So frustrating... I'm imagining a box shredded to bits in the corner of the warehouse, or backed over by a forklift...

New tracking info tonight...it's listed as "delayed," but it also finally showed up in Omaha at 3:05 this afternoon. So I should have it in my hot little hands tomorrow - mail comes between 12 noon and 2:00 pm most days...

It finally arrived... let's see: 2-Day Priority mail takes from Nov. 13 to Nov. 19th? I think the seller should get a refund on his shipping fees from USPS...

The guitar is in good shape other than the issues mentioned by the seller, AND a couple others. When I plugged it in, it was apparent (as the seller revealed) that the wiring wasn't working correctly: intermittent sound from the bridge pickup. I removed the back cover (which was missing one of the four screws...) and touched caps and wiring and got the bridge pickup to work, but it's still touchy. (The neck pickup works, and sounds excellent.)

So rather than do it myself (which I've done for years), because my time is tight and my patience is tighter, I'm taking it to my tech today to have him completely rewire it (using the pots that are there if they're okay - they're the original pots.

The only other thing it needs it to take off some sharp fret ends and adjust the truss rod and bridge a little. Later I may cut a new nut for it and widen the string spacing a little - since there's some room to do that.

But otherwise, nice guitar - the blue has a turquoise kind of sheen to it - very dark, but definitely has some of that in it, not a straight blue. But it didn't buy it primarily for the color; I knew it would be a quality guitar fora great price, and it is. A few tweaks and it will be great.

Also, there was a nice strap in the box and about 10 sets of guitar strings - Dunlops - not a brand I use, but I'll try them, and if I'm not crazy about them, I can use them for stocking stuffers with my son - he can pass them along to his band buddies if he doesn't want them.

Several new pics in profile...

Cool mikey,

Two great scores in a week.

you're right about the shipping they should reimburse the seller.

If you pay for 2 days it should be 2 days unless of course you live in Alaska or worse Australia
