I was looking at the pickups on this guitar and it's the A string that has a higher polepiece.
I thought it was usually the G that's higher so I was thinking maybe they were installed upside down. But then I took the pickguard off and it looks like they are correct.

There are 2 pictures in my profile, one of the front and another of the back.

If they are installed correctly why would they stagger the polepieces this way as opposed to the traditional way?

Correct and looks like a stagger for a plain G. The raised D pole is because that string would have a small core and the greatest distance from the PUP due to bridge radius.

OK, makes sense I guess. A "modern" staggered profile vs vintage.
