It's been years since I've been in the market for a new CS guitar.. In the interim I've discovered that the MSRP / MAP on other major brands of guitars is very negotiable. Case in point would be Martin guitars. 40% off of MSRP is the standard. Would that be applicable to stock Fender CS guitars ?

At one time "40-off" was possible at some stores, but like you, it's been years since I've shopped. But yes, stores like Chuck Levin's in MD, and E.M. Shorts in Wichita have great prices. I think the in-store prices are better at Chuck's than the quotes you can get online, but you can always ask once you start the conversation.

So what does a standard CS Strat go for these days?
Me and a guy I work with were just discussing Fender prices.
I bought a CS Strat around the year 2002 - custom paint color for $1,300. I'm not sure you can buy a regular new Am. Strat for that these days.

Just got a quote for a custom shop guitar

lucky I was sitting down

$7000 Australian

about $5100 US.

only thing was I asked for a matching headstock and custom wound pups.

They wouldn't give me a base price and then the added cost of headstock and pups

for that money I can buy a vintage strat

I think Fender has lost their mind with current pricing. They are now in direct competition with their dealers. Strange turn of events for this company.

I agree, Chris. Local dealers are starting to get weary of Fender's new policies, too... they're feeling the pinch from the big box stores and now from Fender itself.

I've thought of ordering one of the American Design Experience guitars from Fender - mostly because as a lefty I could get some desirable options (color, bridge, neck radius) not available to lefties without going to the above mentioned (ahem!) Custom Shop...at much higher prices (my build would be around $1,600).

Too bad Fender won't let dealers in on the ADE guitars/basses - but I suspect then they'd cost another $500. But I'd like to see the dealer get some business...after all, if one of these guitars needs set-up, where will you take it? Local dealer, right? Can they charge that back to Fender?
