FDP Forum / The 'Pup' Tent / Tele pickup install question

I'm going to install new pickups in my tele and have a question, possibly bordering on OCD. The new pups have nice long vintage pushback cloth leads. The current pups are grounded to the cavity ground but I really don't want to cut the ground lead short for the new pups. Will there be any problem with just leaving the existing cavity grounds in place and grounding the pups directly to the tone pot? I was just going to try that first but though I would ask. Thanks!

The only caution is if it's carbon paint shielding and not metal foil. The carbon acts like a resistor and doesn't carry the electrons nicely like metal shielding.

But it works fine as a shield.
