FDP Forum / The 'Pup' Tent / Stew Mac Overwound Golden Age Bridge Humbucker

I got an Asian Les Paul copy last year, did not want to invest lots of cash on a pup upgrade, and went with a set of Stew Mac Parsons Street PAF clones (unpotted) based upon the reviews here from Peego. Was very happy with the tone of the neck pup but ran into a little bit of high gain "squeal" issue recently when the band started doing some 80's rock tunes.

Again, not wanting to go with Gibson or boutique pups for a $ 300.00 guitar, I recently purchased a Stew Mac Golden Age potted-overwound bridge bucker for $ 59.00. Had them installed by my tech on Saturday and we were both pleasantly surprised (again) at how good it sounded for such a reasonable price.

Will note that the wax potting took care of the squeal but the biggest surprise was how good the tone sounds in the middle position; almost stratty sounding with a nice quackly tone; my tech said it reminded him of a 335 tone. The pup is wound at 12k and the highs are warmer (because of the higher output) but the Alnico 5 compensates a bit with some brightness. It just really sounds great for some reason when pared with the Parsons Street neck which is wound at around the standard 7.2K.

With the bridge alone, the tone reminds me of Neil Schon's work in Journey back in the day through one of my amp settings once I balanced the pups and dialed in the amp at my normal base distortion setting (without any pedals).

I think these have been around since 2010 but a good upgrade IMHO for a reasonable price. If I had a Gibson, I would have looked at Lollar or another boutique brand, but me and the tech were impressed; he said Stew Mac is not known for their "pups" and he usually steers folks doing a cheaper upgrade towards Kent Armstrongs but might consider Stew Mac on some future projects.

Wondering if anyone on here has ever tried these out (the 12k overwound golden age).

Great review.

I haven't tried 'em...I prefer the weaker (lower-power) versions.

On your original pickup--did you rule out the squeal as being caused by one of the pickup's suspension springs? They're magnetic and they can sometimes oscillate and cause feedback issues.

Your knowledge base is immense; that tech issue never crossed my mind. The pup just started squealing in between licks once I boosted up for leads and just assumed that the lack of wax potting contributed. No squeal now but I do get a little more background noise when I face the amp than with the lower output pups......I am assuming that is a function of the higher output.

Thank for all you do on this Forum.
