Dear FDP friends,

BACKGROUND

More than 8000 people have died as a result of the magnitude-7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25. The death toll could rise still higher, as thousands of people remain missing and remote villages affected by the quake are still being reached. More than 14,500 people have been injured in the disaster.

At least 8 million people have been affected by the earthquake, and more than 2 million have been displaced, according to the United Nations. Nearly 40,000 patients have been treated in hospitals in the Kathmandu valley as of Tuesday. Fifty-eight camps have been set up to house roughly 37,500 people who lost homes or had left them. In addition to seeing injured patients and providing supplies, aid and relief groups have also aimed at preventing outbreaks of diseases.

Still, more than a week after the quake, rescue and recovery groups are still working to reach communities in isolated areas that have been cut off after roads were severely damaged or made impassable by landslides. In many villages, especially those near the earthquake's epicenter, nearly all the homes have collapsed, leaving residents to spend nights in the open, sometimes in the rain. The International Red Cross estimates that up to 90 percent of homes were destroyed in some communities.

OUR AIM

As part of our annual International Music day celebrations on June 21 we've been hosting a free concert "LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL" every year since the last six years in which many nepali musicians and bands perform for free.

This year we plan to host the event as a big fund raiser for victims of the earthquake to support the tremendous relief work which will continue for months more. Already big name Nepali musicians and bands have confirmed that they will be playing on this event. We plan to generate anywhere between 15-20 thousand US$ that night but thats just not enough! We are also planning to set up a relief account for our international musician friends and well wishers to send in their gracious donations.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Just last night fellow musician from Oregon Greg Fredrick and friends from The Rouge Suspects and other Oregon musicians generated over 10,000 US$ at a Nepal Earthquake charity gig. If FDPers from all over could host similar FDP charity fundraiser Jams for the Nepal Earthquake victims in the next six weeks prior to our big fundraiser gig in Kathmandu on June 20 we can generate a substantial amount of fund for relief work. We are writing to pledge your allegiance to our effort by donating any amount you can to an online fundraising campaign started by a Nepali friend in San Fransisco. We can then transfer the grand total and use it where its needed the most for those that have lost everything in this disaster.

We are planning an eight hour event on June 20 (Saturday) from 16:00 noon to midnight. We are also starting a Facebook page for this charitable event with updates as they happen. We ask you to please spread the word about this in your network of local and international musicians and friends to generate as much funds in this six weeks prior to the actual event day. We need all the help we can get for this cause. Updates coming in as it happens. The situation is desperate! PLEASE HELP! Thank you all so much!

Deep,

I'm glad to hear that you came through the quakes OK. I work with a guy from Nepal who's family also came through OK, but are facing some trying times.

Do you know what the name of the charity the money should be sent too if we can put together a benefit? Also, do you know what percent they are taking as overhead (some organizations take a crazy amount off the top - and we don't want to go that route!).

I'm not sure if I'll be able to put anything together, since I just had surgery, but I am going to make a few calls to see if I can scare anything up.
