Yesterday I picked up a very nice and fancy Ibanez Art Wood acoustic at a pawn shop. There was a 4 inch crack in the top that was going with the grain. I repaired it and glued it. Still in clamps. Gold plated tuners, fancy inlay and binding. Rosewood back and sides with spruce top. This guitar is beautiful and sounded great even with old strings. Price $84. Best I can tell, it may be an Art Wood 3000. No sticker inside the guitar but stamped in numbers and wording sorta like older Takamines from the 70's. I just bought the guitar on impulse. I might keep it or I might give it away to a needy young player.
Anybody know about these guitars.

I'm relying on my faulty memory, so this might not be completely accurate.

Around eight years ago I purchased an early MIJ Ibanez 12s for my wife. There is (was?) a site with many pages of early Ibanez catalogs, but I don't recall the name. When I researched it I found out that Ibanez reused the Art Wood name several times over the years, and the older AWs varied greatly in materials used. Some of the AWs are beautiful, but basically are "gussied up" plywood.

OK, at least part of my memory still works.

If it sounds good, it is good.

I love Ibanez, even though they don't make many lefties...

I've found their acoustics to be well made, but hit and miss in terms of tone. But if you find a good one, it should be well made and last a long time.

I *do* still have my first real left-handed acoustic - an Ibanez (all laminate) dread-style I purchased new in '78 or '79. Lots of finish cracks in the top, but it's still holding up well with original tuners and no re-fret at this point...and I've used medium strings on it A LOT over the years. The tone doesn't compare to all solid-wood guitars, but it has way too much sentimental value for me to ever sell it.

After I removed the C clamp to repair the crack, I found 2 of the braces had come loose. Apparently someone stepped on the top or some way put weight on it to crack the spruce and loosen 2 braces. I glued the braces and left overnight. The guitar sounds better today. The neck is good but not great. It doesn't have the 100% correct bow most acoustics have. This neck is more just straight. I've loosened the truss rod and tad and we will see if it gives a little bit. I have so many guitars I don't know what I want to do with this one. I have much better guitars that I gig with.

Donate it to a shelter? It might help someone get through a rough time.
